Tesla Model-x Tires
The Model X is Tesla’s entry into the midsize luxury SUV market. Introduced for model year 2015, the Model X has received high marks for safety and performance, and it’s loaded with innovations like gullwing doors and a panoramic windshield, along with 550 horsepower and a 350 mile range. The Model X is derived from the Model S full-size sedan, and comes standard with Autopilot feature, with autonomous self-driving as an option. It relies on radar-based autonomous braking and side-facing ultrasound that steers the vehicle away from threats, and has room for seven adults and their luggage in a 3-row seating setup. The Plaid high-performance edition of the Model X is capable of a 2.6 second 0-60 run and 11.4 second quarter mile, outperforming almost everything on the road. The Model X has a 348 mile range, while the Plaid version has a 333 mile range.
At SimpleTire, we’ve gone through and put together a list of some of the best Tesla Model X tires using SimpleScore, including all-season, all-weather and winter tire choices:
1. Bridgestone Alenza A/S Ultra - Best All-Season Tire
First in our lineup is the Bridgestone Alenza A/S Ultra, an all-season tire that rates highly for year-round traction on dry, wet, or snowy roads, with the sort of luxurious ride and low road noise you’d expect with a Grand Touring tire. A newer entry in the Alenza tire family from Bridgestone, the Alenza A/S Ultra is designed for accurate handling and long, even tread wear. Bridgestone designed the Alenza A/S Ultra around an advanced silica-based tread compound that’s engineered for noise reduction, long wear, and enhanced grip in wet or wintry weather. The asymmetric all-season tread pattern features wide circumferential grooves that direct water away from the tire’s contact patch to fight hydroplaning. When the weather turns snowy, there’s a combination of Bridgestone’s Snow Vices and a dense pattern of sipes working as a system for dependable traction in such conditions. Bridgestone’s Quiet Track technology package tunes the tread by reducing pattern noise and canceling certain frequencies for a surprisingly silent ride on the highway. Internal construction details for the Alenza A/S Ultra are designed for enhanced tread wear and high-speed stability, with a polyester casing topped by two steel belts and a spiral-wound nylon cap layer. Put that all together as a package and Bridgestone is confident enough to cover it with an 80,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty. According to SimpleTire’s SimpleScore system, the Alenza A/S Ultra pulls down an overall average of 9.6, with marks of 9.55 for handling, 9.7 for longevity, and 9.7 for traction. Long tread wear, sharp handling and dependable traction – that's what you can expect with the Bridgestone Alenza A/S Ultra.
2. Pirelli Scorpion WeatherActive - Best All-Weather Tire
Over the decades, the Pirelli brand has been synonymous with quality and performance. The Pirelli Scorpion WeatherActive is one of the more recent additions to their product line and falls into a whole new-ish category of tires: the all-weather tire. All-weather tires are pretty similar to all-season tires but are designed to surpass their performance – particularly when it comes to winter traction – without an appreciable trade-off in tread life, ride quality, road manners, noise level, and handling, cornering, and braking. Sure enough, the Scorpion WeatherActive has the tire industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service. Where the rubber meets the road, the Scorpion WeatherActive’s features a directional tread pattern with a 3-rib design that’s rigid to resist tread squirm, angled grooves that channel away water and slush to fight hydroplaning, a zigzag central groove, and low road noise thanks to a tread pitch that’s randomized and computer tuned to cancel certain frequencies and resonances. The tread compound of the Scorpion WeatherActive is engineered to stay flexible and deliver good traction when temperatures are below freezing, but is still durable enough for long treadwear. Pirelli backs the Scorpion WeatherActive with a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty. Total it all up and you get SimpleScores of 9.8 for traction, 9.2 for longevity and 9.5 for handling – all pretty admirable, if you ask us.
3. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV - Best Winter Tire
What is a Hakkapeliitta, you might be wondering…”Hakkapeliitta” is Finnish for that country’s 16th century cavalry troops. Nokian is a Finland-based tire manufacturer (yes, same parent company as Nokia phones) that specializes in winter tires that are up to the job of getting drivers through a Scandinavian winter. Here at SimpleTire, we’ve been impressed with Nokian tires and the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV for some time. If an ice storm turns your roads hockey rink-slick, studded tires are the only thing that can safely get you through it; the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV is pre-drilled for easy installation of studs (check your local and state laws for legality of studded tires). Its stud pattern is placed so that it can deliver the best traction while keeping noise low. For dependable traction and control, its tread pattern is a system of angled, sweeping grooves, a dense network of sipes. Its rubber formulation is designed to stay pliable in subfreezing weather, bringing in a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. As you’d probably expect, this tire is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service. Longevity is also a real plus with the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV, with its Aramid-reinforced sidewall, tough internal construction and a durable tread compound (SimpleScore of 9.1 for longevity). Cornering, braking, and control all benefit from a rigid sidewall enough for a SimpleScore of 8.9 for handling. We should note here that the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV is also designed for low rolling resistance, saving fuel over the tire’s service life.
While these are Tesla Model X tires on the market today, there are plenty of other choices out there. Check out these other tires that blend performance and value:
4. Toyo Celsius Sport - Great UHP All-Weather Tire
Now we come to another great tire in the all-weather category, the Toyo Celsius Sport. The Celsius Sport is designed for year-round traction with UHP levels of performance, including shorter braking distances, sharp steering response and confident cornering. The Celsius Sport is stamped with the industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service. It’s designed with an asymmetric tread pattern with circumferential grooves to channel water away and resist hydroplaning, and zigzag shaped blocks with multi-wave sipes and zigzags at the inboard tread elements, actually locking snow into the tread for snow/snow friction. That’s enough for us to give it an 8.5 SimpleScore for traction. Handling is enhanced with a sticky silica-rich tread compound, single-ply polyester construction, a reinforced shoulder and tie bars that reduce tread deformation and boost rigidity for solid cornering ability for a SimpleScore of 9.3. 3. With a longevity score of 8.00, this tire features durable, stable construction and is covered by Toyo with a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty.
5. Yokohama Geolandar X-CV - Great All-Season Tire
We’re going to round things out with the Yokohama Geolandar X-CV, an all-season tire that’s designed specifically around the performance of today’s SUVs and crossovers. The Geolandar X-CV gets a SimpleScore of 8.6 for traction, thanks to an all-season tread with four circumferential grooves, a staggered pattern of 2D and 3D sipes, and a silica-rich tread formulation that boosts wet-weather grip. We’re also impressed with the cornering, steering response, and braking properties of the Geolandar X-CV, thanks to its stable internal construction and rigid, reinforced shoulder that stands up to the forces and inertia of cornering, which lead to a SimpleScore of 9.1 for handling. Yokohama backs the Geolandar X-CV with a 50,000 mile manufacturer’s treadwear warranty, for a longevity score of 8.4 according to SimpleScore rankings. We should also mention that this is a superbly quiet tire, with a five-pitch tread pattern that’s randomized and tuned to cancel frequencies and mute road noise.
