At SimpleTire, we’ve put together some of the best tire choices for your Pontiac G5, including all-season, all-weather, and winter tires, then ranked them in Best/Great/Good order according to our SimpleScore system, which takes data points from reviews and other sources and refines them into a numerical score for traction, longevity, and handling. Ready? Let’s go in for a closer look:
1. General Altimax RT45: Best All-Season tire
We’re going to kick off our list with a tire we’ve been impressed with for some time: the General Altimax RT45. The Altimax RT45 is nothing if not durable – General stands by this tire with a 65,000 or 75,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty (depending on size), which is enough to give it an outstanding 9.9 for longevity in our SimpleScore rankings. It features an all-season tread design that’s been tested and proven on the track and in the real world, including a network of sipes and lateral grooves with circumferential grooves for great wet or dry traction. SimpleScore for traction: 9.0. Handling is a strong point too, with a solid center rib that boosts road feedback, steering response, and cornering dynamics for a SimpleScore of 8.7. This is a tire that’s quiet and refined far past its price point, and we’ve also taken notice of the visual alignment indicator that makes it easy for a driver to keep tabs on uneven tire wear due to alignment problems. When tread depth reaches the legal minimum of 2/32”, the words “Replace Tire” will be visible – they’re molded into the tread and will only appear when the tread depth reaches that minimum.
2. Bridgestone Weatherpeak: Best All-Weather tire
Next up is a great all-weather tire for your Pontiac G5, the Bridgestone Weatherpeak. If you live in a part of the country where it snows several inches and then stays cold enough that the roads are snow-packed for days or weeks, you’ve probably already found out that most all-season tires just aren’t capable of dependable traction. All-weather tires are a newish category that are designed to perform a lot like all-season tires, but specifically with better traction in snow and slush. Along those lines, Bridgestone engineers designed the Weatherpeak’s tread for tenacious grip in winter weather, with a thick network of sipes, the hair-thin slits that multiply traction by adding hundreds of extra biting edges, giving drivers the advantage they need to get through deeper snow or slush with ease. The 3D design of the full-depth sipes of the Bridgestone Weatherpeak continue to boost your winter traction even as the miles pile up and tread depth wears, an ingenious feature since most tires lose traction as tread depth diminishes. Another winter-weather feature of the Weatherpeak is its innovative “snow vices”, grooves that build traction by trapping and retaining snow to build snow-to-snow friction. Taking that all into account, it’s no surprise that the Bridgestone Weatherpeak has the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service; tests have shown winter braking distances that are as much as 30 feet shorter than the competition’s tires. With that all in mind, we gave the Bridgestone Weatherpeak a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction. Steering response and cornering are also superb with consistent performance that’s never touchy or jumpy; the Weatherpeak’s SimpleScore of 9.5 for handling comes from its rubber formulation and tread features. Road manners, steering response, and cornering ability are also top-notch with this tire, even in changing weather conditions. Bridgestone backs the Weatherpeak with a 70,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty, the kind of warranty coverage that’s enough for us to give this tire a SimpleScore of 9.8 for longevity.
3. Nokian Nordman 7: Best Winter tire
If you assume that a tire company that’s based in Finland would have plenty of experience developing tires to get through the demands of a tough Scandinavian winter, you’d be correct in that assumption. Nokian (yes, the same parent company as Nokia phones) has specialized in next-generation winter tires for decades. The Nordman 7 is designed for the absolute worst winter weather you might face, the kind of conditions where all-season tires are going to be left floundering. The Nordman 7 features a purpose-built rubber compound to stay flexible and deliver great traction in sub-freezing conditions. Where the rubber meets the road, there’s a directional winter tread consisting of deep grooves and aggressive sipes to dig into snow and slush, earning it a near-perfect SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction, as well as an 8.7 for handling. If you live in a place with that kind of winter weather, it’s best if you don’t have to go out at all, but sometimes that isn’t an option. The Nokian Nordman 7 is designed to deliver the performance of a studded tire, without the noise, legal restrictions, and impact to road surfaces that go with them.
While these are the best Pontiac G5 tires on the market, there are plenty of other tires to consider.
4. Yokohama Avid Ascend LX: Great All-Season tire
Here at SimpleTire, we’ve been impressed by tires from the Yokohama line for a long time and the Yokohama Avid Ascend LX is no exception. The Avid Ascend LX is designed with a network of circumferential grooves, lateral grooves, angled grooves, and wavy 3D sipes for year-round grip, bringing home a SimpleScore of 8.6 for traction. Treadwear properties are a strong point with the Avid Ascend LX; it features a wider, flatter footprint for more even treadwear and distribution of vehicle weight and Yokohama’s L-2 polymer blend tread compound for wear resistance. For any tire it’s hard to complain about an 85,000 mile warranty – we give the Avid Ascend LX a 9.7 for longevity. All those tread features (along with large, reinforced shoulder blocks and a solid center rib) work together for steering response that’s crisp and immediate, predictable cornering, and great braking – we give the Avid Ascend LX a SimpleScore of 8.7 for traction.
5. Cooper ProControl: Good All-Season tire
Next up we’ve got the Cooper ProControl, a versatile premium all-season tire that’s a great choice for the Pontiac G5 along with a whole range of sedans, minivans, and crossovers. Internally, the ProControl is designed with a polyester casing with an angled steel belt package, high turn-up at the sidewall, a nylon reinforcement cap, and a durable, long-wearing tread compound. Cooper covers the ProControl with an outstanding 70,000 mile warranty, which gives it an outstanding SimpleScore of 9.8 in the longevity department. The ProControl is designed with a profile and footprint that evenly distributes vehicle weight and the forces of cornering and braking, for a SimpleScore of 8.6 for handling. In the real world, that means cornering and handling performance that’s consistent, predictable, and precise. Wet-weather grip comes from a combination of circumferential grooves and lateral grooves that help resist hydroplaning, and its innovative sipes are designed to expand and widen to continue delivering extra traction as the tire wears down. The tire’s sipe network is designed with a higher density in the center ribs for improved grip in low-friction snow and slush – we give the Cooper ProControl a SimpleScore of 8.6 for traction.
