When it’s time for the rubber to meet the road, the Cinturato WeatherActive delivers sharp and precise cornering and braking with a stiffer sidewall and shoulder and 3-rib directional tread pattern for enhanced rigidity and minimal tread squirm. The Pirelli Cinturato WeatherActive resists hydroplaning with angled grooves that channel water and slush away from the contact patch, along with a zigzag central groove. You can expect a quiet ride with the WeatherActive too, with a tread pitch that’s randomized and computer-tuned so that road noise is kept to a minimum by canceling certain frequencies and resonances. The rubber compound of the Cinturato WeatherActive is designed for traction in subfreezing weather by staying flexible for great grip but is still tough and durable enough for long miles. The Cinturato WeatherActive is backed with a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty. After we did our calculations for the WeatherActive, we came to SimpleScores of 9.8 for traction, 9.2 for longevity, and 9.5 for handling – results that show the Pirelli WeatherActive to be a great performer and great value, if you ask us.

2. Continental ProContact GX: Best All-Season tire

The Continental ProContact GX is a performance-oriented all-season tire that’s a great choice for a Hotrod Grand Touring 2+2 like the Toyota Supra. We gave the ProContact GX a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction; it delivers exceptional grip in wet, dry, or wintry weather with a set of circumferential grooves, sipes, and multi-directional angled grooves that all work together for tenacious traction. Continental backs the ProContact GX with an 80,000 mile warranty and their Total Confidence Plan, which calculates to a SimpleScore of 8.9 for longevity. Steering response, cornering, and braking with the ProContact GX are all sharp and immediate thanks to its tread design, internal construction, and sipe pattern – this is a tire that’s OEM for makes and models like the Jaguar XE, Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG and C300, and Subaru Forester and Outback. With those kinds of credentials, we give the ProContact GX a SimpleScore of 9.5 for handling. We should also mention that Continental designed the ProContact GX around low rolling resistance, ride comfort, and low noise, all of which make it a great option for a Toyota Supra.

3. Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate: Best UHP tire

We haven’t even mentioned any UHP tires yet, so here’s one of our favorites: the Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate, a tire we’ve come to know for its awe-inspiring performance. Goodyear designed the Eagle Exhilarate around a high-silica tread formulation that boosts wet-weather grip and wear properties and a tread pattern that features five ribs and wide circumferential grooves. We gave the Eagle Exhilarate a top-notch SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction thanks to its network of sipes and lateral/angled grooves. Cornering, braking distances, and steering response are all best-in-class, thanks to a footprint that’s optimized for more positive contact with the road, reinforced shoulders, and a stiff tread face that holds up against inertia and G-forces of cornering. The internal design of the Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate includes a polyester casing, lightweight, high-tensile steel belts, and two layers of polyamide reinforcement plies for high-speed stability and ride comfort. Goodyear covers the Eagle Exhilarate with a 45,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty, and SimpleTire calculated a SimpleScore of 8.6 for longevity. That’s a really strong point when you bear in mind that most UHP tires don’t even offer a mileage warranty.

4. Falken Azenis FK460 A/S: Great UHP All-Season tire

Here at SimpleTire, we’ve been impressed with just about everything from the Falken brand for some time now, and the Azenis FK460 A/S is no exception. The Falken Azenis FK460 A/S is a tire you can count on for dependable, confident grip, with its advanced 4D Nano tread compound, Emerging Grooves that open up and expand for extended performance even as the tire’s tread depth wears, Canyon Groove tech for improved grip in wet or wintry conditions, and circumferential grooves with chamfered edges for a traction score of 8.6. The Falken Azenis FK460 A/S is covered by a 50,000 mile warranty (thanks in part to that 4D Nano tread compound), good for a SimpleScore of 9.1 in longevity. Steering response, cornering, road manners, and braking performance all exceed expectations with this tire, for a SimpleScore of 8.8 for handling. It’s also worth mentioning that the Azenis FK460 A/S is quiet and composed on the highway, with grooves that are acoustically tuned to cut down on wind noise and keep road noise to a minimum by canceling certain frequencies.

5. Kumho Ecsta V730: Great UHP tire

Let’s wrap up this list with a great UHP tire from Kumho, the Ecsta V730. The Ecsta V730 is loaded with innovative features, starting with its motorsports-inspired asymmetric tread with circumferential grooves and an extensive outboard shoulder element, lateral notches, and a footprint that’s optimized to handle the lateral forces of cornering and braking with confidence for a very strong handling score of 8.6. The Ecsta V730 is also engineered for surefooted traction in wet or dry conditions, with a high-tech tread compound that’s infused with fine carbon black and synthetic resins for tenacious grip for a traction score of 8.4. The Kumho Ecsta V730 does fall somewhat when it comes to longevity, with a SimpleScore of 7.7 and no treadwear coverage. This isn’t surprising, since the Ecsta V730’s softer, stickier tread compound can wear quickly, especially when driven hard. Like all UHP tires, the rubber formulation of the Ecsta V730 can harden up and lose traction in colder weather. Kumho recommends this tire should not be used if temperatures are below 45 degrees F.
