Toyota Land-cruiser Tires
Toyota’s rugged Land Cruiser was introduced way back in 1951 as a tough Jeep-type vehicle. Over the years, the Land Cruiser was available as a four-door station wagon, a pickup truck and a comfortable full-size SUV, without ever compromising its toughness and durability. For model year 2021, the Land Cruiser featured extensive weight savings, a lowered center of gravity, and suspension improvements, along with a twin-turbo 3.4L V6 putting out 409 hp. Later iterations of the Land Cruiser came with niceties like a 14-speaker JBL audio setup, rearview camera, heated/ventilated seats, navigation system, and more. The Land Cruiser has always been a very capable off-road performer, and Toyota ups the game with various off-road terrain modes, locking differentials, downhill assist and CRAWL, which functions almost like off-road cruise control and limits vehicle speed for best traction. The Land Cruiser is available with Base and Heritage Edition trim levels.
Using SimpleScore, here are the best Toyota Land Cruiser tires on the market today:
1. BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A - Best All-Terrain tire
We’re going to kick off this list with the BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A, an all-terrain tire that’s equally capable in mud, sand, gravel, rocks or snow but still has a forgiving ride, low noise, and good road manners on the pavement. The Trail-Terrain T/A is designed with a durable, versatile tread compound that stands up to rough use but also brings reliable all-season traction. It’s molded into an all-terrain tread pattern with a dense network of 3D sipes and a high void ratio for good self-cleaning of mud and debris. The Trail-Terrain T/A’s full-depth sipes and aggressive design are good enough in snow to get the tire industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service, and we give this tire a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction. Internal construction consists of a two-ply polyester casing with twin steel belts and a single nylon reinforcement ply. BFGoodrich backs the Trail-Terrain T/A with a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty, and we give it a solid 9.1 SimpleScore for longevity. Closed lateral grooves and a serrated, scooped shoulder help with both offroad traction and road manners on the highway, for a SimpleScore of 9.5 in the handling department.
2. Michelin Defender LTX M/S - Best All-Season tire
For many drivers, the Michelin name is synonymous with performance and quality. The Defender LTX M/S is a tire that really delivers on the Michelin reputation, and the Defender family of tires is one of the best-known and most dependable tires in their lineup. Michelin’s Evertread rubber formulation is designed for year-round traction as well as durability and long wear; Michelin stands by this tire with a 50,000 or 70,000 mile warranty (depending on speed rating), and we give it a SimpleScore of 9.4 for longevity. The Defender LTX M/S’s all-season grip comes from three circumferential grooves and lateral/angled grooves to evacuate water from the contact patch and resist hydroplaning, and a dense network of sipes to augment wet-weather or winter traction, enough for a SimpleScore of 9.6 in that department. Michelin’s MaxTouch system optimizes the tire’s contact patch (and lowers rolling resistance) for improved cornering and steering response and shorter braking distances. SimpleScore for handling: 9.4.
3. Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 - Best Winter tire
Now we come to our winter tire, and the Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 is just about perfect for a Toyota Land Cruiser winter tire. The Blizzak DM-V2 has the design and dependability you need to get you through some nasty winter conditions, but it won’t wear you out with a rough, noisy ride. Bridgestone’s advanced winter tread formulation incorporates multi-cell rubber compounds and a hydrophilic coating that stays flexible at subfreezing temperatures. Take a closer look at its tread design and you’ll see it’is loaded with features like increased block edges for more surface area and “bite particles,” letting the Blizzak DM-V2 really dig in and chew its way through snow slush and ice. We give the Blizzak DM-Vw a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction. The Blizzak DM-V2 is also designed with an enhanced contact patch, not only enhancing traction but also steering feedback and response, bringing home a SimpleScore of 8.9 for handling. We’re impressed with the durability of the Blizzak DM-V2 as well. It’s designed with the innovative NanoPro Tech Multicell Compound for the first 55% of the tire’s tread depth, then the remaining 45% a standard winter compound still remains very capable on snow and slush (SimpleScore of 9.3 for longevity). The Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service.
While these are the best Toyota Land Cruiser tires on the market, there are plenty of other options available:
4. Nitto Terra Grappler G2 - Great All-Terrain Tire
Time for our choice for Great All-Terrain Tire: the Nitto Terra Grappler G2. This addition to the Nitto Grappler family is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service, with an aggressive all-terrain tread pattern that includes 3D sipes and staggered shoulder lugs that extend halfway down the sidewall for great lateral terrain so you can claw your way out of ruts or mud. That’s all we need to give the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 a SimpleScore of 8.5 for traction. We’re also impressed with this tire’s durability, including its damage-resistant tread compound, robust internal construction and tie bars that connect tread blocks for toughness and resistance to flexing and stresses. Nitto offers a 50,000 or 65,000 mile warranty (depending on size), and we give this tire a SimpleScore of 8.2 in the longevity department. On the pavement, the Nitto Terra Grappler G2’s road manners, braking performance, steering response, and cornering are all pretty civilized (thanks in part to those tie bars in the tread) for a SimpleScore of 8.6 for handling. We should also mention that the Terra Grappler G2 has a reversible design with two different sidewall treatments (choose from “blade” or “lightning bolt” styles) so that you can customize the looks of your Land Cruiser’s tire choice.
5.: Toyo Proxes ST III - Great All-Season tire
We’re going to round this out with the Toyo Proxes ST III, a performance-oriented all-season tire for light trucks and SUVs. The Proxes ST III is designed for sharp, responsive steering, stable cornering, and shorter braking distances, with a directional chevron-shaped tread pattern, wide shoulder blocks, and deep grooves – we give this tire a SimpleScore of a solid 8.7 for handling. Year-round traction is good thanks to that tread design and a pattern of multi-wave sipes, for a SimpleScore of 8.6 in that department. Toyo backs the Proxes ST III with a 40,000 mile treadwear warranty – we give this tire a SimpleScore of 8.1 for longevity.
