Known overseas as the Mazda Familia, the Protege had a long history of sedan, wagon and hatchback models, dating back to the 1960s. Later generations of the Protege were subcompact sedans, with a few performance options available and Mazda's traditional commitment to quality and engineering. Proteges were available in Base, SE, ES, LX, DX and MP3 trim levels; interestingly, 4WD was an option on some models. The Protege was discontinued in 2003 when it was replaced by the Mazda3.
