Jeep Renegade-trailhawk Tires
There are few American brands more iconic than Jeep, and the Renegade is a new kind of Jeep. Introduced in model year 2017, the Jeep Renegade is a subcompact SUV that’s available in FWD or 4WD, using Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system. The Renegade is available with a turbocharged 1.4L 4-cylinder or an advanced 2.4L 4-cylinder, and innovations like the MySky sunroof, which can be retracted or removed completely. The Renegade is available in Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk trim packages. The Trailhawk is the ruggedized version of the Renegade, with front tow hooks, 17” aluminum wheels, skid plates, extra ground clearance, a rugged interior and Jeep’s Active Drive Low 4WD system. The Trailhawk package also includes Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction control feature, with modes for snow, sand, mud, rock, or automatic. The Trailhawk is powered by Jeep’s 180 hp 2.4L Tigershark 4-cyl and is the smallest vehicle in the Jeep lineup.
Here at SimpleTire, our team has gone through the catalog and rounded up some of the best Jeep Renegade Trailhawk tires, including premium all-season, all-terrain, and winter tire options. We then ranked them in Best/Great/Good order and used our SimpleScore system to assign numerical values for traction, handling, and longevity for each one. Ready? Let’s go in for a closer look:
1. Goodyear Assurance MaxLife - Best All-Season tire
Goodyear picked out the right model name with the MaxLife; it’s an all-season tire that we’ve consistently been impressed by for its value and durability. It’s a tire that you can count on for inspiring, confident performance for drivers and grip in all kinds of weather. For over a century, Goodyear has built a heritage of quality and innovation and has become one of the most respected and well-known names in the tire business, and the Goodyear Assurance MaxLife is a tire that delivers on everything you’d expect from a Goodyear product. The Goodyear Assurance MaxLife is designed for durability and long, even wear, with an advanced tread formulation and rugged internal construction. With that in mind, our SimpleScores rankings give the Assurance MaxLife a remarkable longevity score of 9.9. Goodyear’s TredLife technology package is enough to cover the Assurance MaxLife with an 85,000 mile limited manufacturer’s treadwear warranty. Road manners, steering response, and cornering are all superb, with a semi-solid center rib that gives drivers excellent steering feedback and response as well as straight–line stability. Braking performance and maneuverability are all terrific as well, with semi-closed shoulders, a sticky tread formula, and a polyamide reinforcement layer that enhances cornering by boosting the tire’s rigidity to resist the stresses of sharp maneuvers. With that all in mind we totaled up a SimpleScore of 9.5 for handling. Grip is multiplied with a dense network of sipes, adding hundreds of extra biting edges for wet or wintry conditions. Along with that, a system of circumferential grooves, plus angled and lateral grooves all work together to cut through standing water and channel it behind the tire’s contact patch to fight hydroplaning. With that kind of performance on tap for cornering and braking in wet or dry weather, we figure that’s enough for a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction.
2. Toyo Open Country A/T III - Best All-Terrain tire
The Renegade Trailhawk is designed to be equally at home off the pavement as on the highway, so here’s our best all-terrain tire choice. The Toyo Open Country A/T III is an eager performer and exactly the kind of tire that you can count on to get the job done for offroad forays in sand, snow, mud, or rocks. That doesn’t mean, however, that you have to give up the low noise, responsive handling, good road manners, and comfortable ride that you’d expect from some of the best all-season tires. That might all sound like some high expectations, but the Toyo Open Country A/T III is exactly that kind of all-terrain tire. Toyo made durability a top priority with the Open Country A/T III; it features a polyester casing, two steel belts, and a spiral wrap polyamide cap layer with a tough cut-and-chip-resistant tread compound. The Open Country A/T III gets a very respectable SimpleScore of 9.6 for longevity with its 65,000 mile manufacturer tread life warranty. The high void ratio and stone ejectors of the symmetric all-terrain tread are designed to easily shed stones, mud, and debris so there’s a clear section of the tire to dig in as the wheel turns. Its extra-deep tread is designed for confident grip along with long wear. If you have to handle winter conditions, the Open Country A/T III has the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service (SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction). Cornering, braking, and steering response are also immediate and sharp without being overly sensitive, thanks to the shoulder design, sipe pattern, and stable internal construction of the Open Country A/T III for a handling score of 9.3. All in all, the Toyo Open Country A/T III is a tire you can’t go wrong with for a Jeep Renegade Trailhawk with performance that’s equally balanced on- or off-road.
3. Continental VikingContact 7 - Best Winter tire
Our choice for best winter tire is the VikingContact 7 from Continental, one that scores pretty highly in our SimpleScore rankings all the way around. Continental designed the VikingContact 7 with a rubber compound that’s infused with silica and canola oil for great flexibility in subfreezing weather, along with a winter tread pattern of cross-hatched grooves, snow grooves that pick up and retain snow for enhanced friction, interlocking sipes for traction in snow, ice, and slush, and wider grooves to help resist hydroplaning by evacuating water and slush. All of that adds up to a near-perfect SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. Those tread elements are all linked together with interlocked block bridges for better rigidity and control, marking up a SimpleScore of 9.0 for handling. Though the VikingContact 7 doesn’t have a mileage warranty (most winter tires don’t), it’s durable enough to mark up a SimpleScore of 8.0 for longevity. Unsurprisingly, the Continental VikingContact 7 is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service. Overall aggregate SimpleScore for the Continental VikingContact 7 is a respectable 8.7.
While these are the best Jeep Renegade Trailhawk tires on the market, there are plenty of other options to consider:
4. Yokohama Geolandar CV G058 - Great All-Season tire
Yokohama designed the Geolandar CV G058 around the traction, torque, power, and handling requirements of today’s minivans and crossovers, making it a perfect choice for the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk. We’re impressed with the wear properties of the Geolandar CV G058 – its blend of microsilica particles and specialized polymers in the tread formulation means great treadwear (and a 65,000 mile manufacturer’s treadwear warranty) and improved traction in wet or wintry weather. SimpleScore for longevity: a hard-to-beat 9.9. Our SimpleScore for traction comes in at 8.4; the Yokohama Geolandar CV G058 features chamfered ribs, circumferential grooves, 2D and 3D sipes, and serrated outer grooves in the tread design that all work to deliver the grip you need year-round. SimpleScore for handling is even stronger at 8.6, thanks to all those tread elements and the fact that the Geolandar CV G058’s rubber formulation is flexible and sticky for great mechanical grip on the pavement.
5. Falken Wildpeak A/T3W - Great All-Terrain tire
Here’s a tire that can get dirty and lay down serious off-road performance in rough terrain without compromising on the low noise, road manners, and ride quality you want on the pavement: the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. The Wildpeak A/T3W is certified with the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service and features aggressive tread blocks with step-down features and support ramps with stone ejectors to protect the casing. Wraparound lugs at the sidewall and shoulder provide excellent lateral traction and we give the Wildpeak A/T3W an excellent SimpleScore of 9.3 in that department. The Wildpeak A/T3W is tough, too – it’s designed with a wear-resistant tread pattern and heavy-duty reinforced sidewall with built-in heat diffusers that protect the tire from excess heat buildup. With its 55,000 mile warranty, we give the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W a SimpleScore of 7.6 for longevity. Road manners, noise levels, cornering, responsiveness, and braking performance are all superlative too, for a SimpleScore of 9.0 for handling.
