Here at SimpleTire, we’ve gone through and compiled some of the best tire options for your Honda S2000, including ultra-high-performance (UHP), summer, and all-season tires. We then ranked them in Best/Great/Good format, according to SimpleScore Ready? Let’s go in for a closer look:
1. Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus 3: Best UHP All-Season tire
We’re going to start our list with the Pirelli P Zero All-Season Plus 3, an ultra-high-performance all-season tire that’s designed for exuberant performance along with dependable year-round traction. The P Zero All Season Plus 3 starts everything off with an updated polymer-enhanced tread formulation for durability and long wear, along with a twin steel belt package, a polyester casing, and polyamide reinforcement plies for a 50,000 mile manufacturer’s treadwear warranty. In light of that, we give the Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus 3 a very respectable SimpleScore of 8.9 for longevity. Year-round grip is a real plus with this tire, with an asymmetric tread pattern that features a minimal void area to put more rubber in contact with the road. Excellent performance in wet or wintry conditions comes from a variety of sipes, including full-depth 3D sipes in select tread blocks, for an outstanding SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. Enhanced steering response, braking, and cornering are all owing to larger pitch-sequenced tread blocks and reinforced shoulders, for a SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling.
2. Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02: Best Summer tire
The motorsports-inspired Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 is the tire of choice at ROUSH Performance, AMG Driving Academy, and BMW Performance Driving School, and for good reason. The ExtremeContact Sport 02 is designed with Continental’s SportPlus technology package, starting with Continental’s exclusive Silane+ tread compound that delivers tenacious grip in wet or dry conditions. We gave the ExtremeContact Sport 02 a SimpleScore of 9.6 for handling, thanks to its wide, flat footprint that puts more rubber in contact with the road, wide shoulder blocks, and a continuous center rib that all boost steering response and cornering ability. Traction is another strong point, with a SimpleScore of 9.7, thanks to the sticky tread formulation and a system of circumferential and angled grooves that channel water away from the tire’s contact patch for improved resistance to hydroplaning. While many summer and UHP tires don’t come with a treadwear warranty at all, the ExtremeContact Sport 02 has a 30,000 mile manufacturer’s warranty and a 2-ply casing with two steel belts and a polyamide cap layer. We give the ExtremeContact Sport 02 a SimpleScore of 8.5 for durability. Like all summer tires, the softer, stickier tread compound of the ExtremeContact Sport 02 will stiffen and lose grip in colder weather; these tires shouldn’t be used if temperatures are below 45 degrees F.
3. Bridgestone Potenza Sport: Best UHP tire
At SimpleTire, we’ve been pretty impressed with the Bridgestone Potenza Sport. This ultra-high-performance tire is built on Bridgestone’s long experience in the motorsports realm, with a tread compound that’s designed for confident wet and dry traction along with the reinforcing block stiffness that’s needed for sharp, responsive braking, cornering, and steering for a handling SimpleScore of 9.9). Wet traction is outstanding with large circumferential ribs and grooves that help evacuate water from the tire’s contact patch to resist hydroplaning. Along with the broad outboard blocks at the shoulder for great cornering and braking grip, we decided we’d give the Potenza Sport a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. The internal construction of the Potenza Sport includes a polyester casing reinforced by two steel belts and a tough aramid-nylon ply for high-speed stability and long wear. SimpleScore for longevity is 7.3. Again, remember that the Potenza Sport is designed as a summer-only tire, with a rubber compound that will stiffen up and lose traction in colder weather. Like most ultra-high-performance tires, the Potenza Sport should be switched for all-season or winter tires when temperatures are below 45 degrees F.
4. Yokohama Advan Apex V601: Great UHP
We’re going to close out this list with the Yokohama Advan Apex V601, a great value in a UHP tire for the Honda S2000. The Advan Apex V601 delivers braking, cornering, control, and steering response that are all first-rate, thanks to a silica-rich tread compound, reinforced sidewall and shoulder for stiffness and reduced tread squirm, and a solid center rib for improved steering response and stability. That’s plenty of data points for a SimpleScore of 8.8 for handling. We’re also impressed with the Advan Apex’s long-wearing tread compound and robust construction, which are enough for Yokohama to offer a 25,000 mile warranty (unusual for any UHP tire). That’s enough for a SimpleScore of 8.1 for longevity. Wet and dry weather traction are also excellent; the Advan Apex V601’s asymmetric tread features a narrow outboard groove that dissipates heat well, three circumferential grooves for water evacuation and resistance to hydroplaning, and a rounded rib profile that puts more rubber in contact with the road. In the traction department, we give the Advan Apex V601 a SimpleScore of 8.6.
