1. Continental ContiSportContact 5 - Best UHP tire
If you’ve got a premium high-performance sedan, coupe, or crossover and you want to get the most out of your vehicle, you should think about a set of ultra-high-performance (UHP) tires. Continental designed the ContiSportContact 5 initially around the performance parameters of Mercedes-Benz SLK350 roadsters, with great cornering and braking traction paired with reduced rolling resistance. Continental’s Black Chilli tread compound blends long-chain and short-chain polymers for long, even sticky adhesion to the road for shorter braking distances and good heat dispersal. This tread compound, along with a solid center rib that improves steering response and a “macro-block” outboard shoulder, adds up to handling that’s good enough to merit a SimpleScore of 9.9. Wet-weather grip is enhanced by circumferential grooves and sipes, for a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. Longevity comes in at a SimpleScore of 8.6, thanks to the ContiSportContact 5’s durable internal design of twin steel belts and spiral-wrapped polyamide layer. It’s worth noting that the ContiSportContact 5 also keeps road noise to a minimum with ContiSilent Technology, a layer of foam that helps soak up sound waves and vibrations from the road. Like most UHP tires, the ContiSportContact 5 is not designed for colder weather; its softer, stickier tread formulation will stiffen up and lose traction on cold days and it shouldn’t be used if temperatures are below 40-45 degrees F.
2. Bridgestone Potenza Sport - Great UHP tire
Here’s another great UHP tire to think about – the Bridgestone Potenza Sport. The Potenza Sport is designed as an ultra-high-performance (UHP) tire that delivers the best of both worlds: an exhilarating, confident driving experience on wet or dry pavement along with dependable traction and a quiet, refined ride. The Potenza Sport is designed with a sticky silica-rich tread formulation that offers great mechanical grip on the pavement, and a performance-oriented tread pattern that helps to ensure the most rubber possible in contact with the road. Four wide circumferential grooves provide a pathway to move standing water from the contact patch, boosting wet–weather performance and avoiding hydroplaning. A network of 3D sipes bolsters tread rigidity for great cornering response and wet-weather traction, and a tuned tread pattern cancels certain resonances and frequencies to keep highway noise to a minimum. After running the numbers, that comes out to a SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling and 9.9 for traction. The Potenza Sport does lose some points when it comes to longevity, with a SimpleScore of 7.3. The Potenza Sport doesn’t come with a tread life warranty (most UHP tires don’t), and isn’t suitable for winter conditions: the softer, stickier tread formulation will stiffen up and lose traction in colder weather. Like all UHP and summer tires, the Potenza Sport shouldn’t be used if temperatures are below 40-45 degrees F.
3. Falken Azenis FK460 A/S - Best UHP All-Season tire
If you need the everyday practicality of an all-season tire with the sharp performance of a UHP tire, you really might want to think about the Azenis FK460 A/S from Falken. The Falken Azenis FK460 A/S is a versatile tire you can rely on for dependable grip in all kinds of weather, with its advanced 4D Nano tread compound. It would just be intuitive that any tire is going to lose traction as tread depth wears down, but the innovative Emerging Grooves tech of the Azenis FK460 A/S is designed to expand the grooves and open them up for extended performance even as tire depth gets shallower. The Canyon Groove design and circumferential grooves with chamfered edges help to improve grip in wet or wintry conditions. They’re designed to work as a system to deliver the grip you need for a traction score of 8.6. Thanks in part to the great wear properties and durability of that 4D Nano tread compound, Falken covers the Azenis FK460 A/S with a 50,000 mile warranty, pulling in a SimpleScore of 9.1 for longevity. Braking performance, steering response, cornering, and road manners are all crisp and accurate with this tire, for a SimpleScore of 8.8 for handling. We also really should mention here that the Azenis FK460 A/S is refined and quiet on the highway, with grooves that are acoustically tuned to keep road noise to a minimum by reducing wind noise and canceling certain frequencies and resonances. The overall average SimpleScore for the Falken Azenis FK460 A/S is a very strong 8.7.
4. Yokohama Advan Sport A/S Plus - Great UHP All-Season tire
Here’s another tire that offers a great balance of year-round traction along with thrilling performance, the Advan Sport A/S Plus from Yokohama. The Yokohama Advan Sport A/S Plus is covered by a 55,000 mile warranty and is designed with a high-turnup sidewall, long-wearing silica-rich tread compound, and durable internal construction, racking up a SimpleScore of 9.1 for longevity. Extra-large outboard shoulder blocks and 2-in-1 intermediate blocks all work to enhance cornering and steering responses that are accurate and immediate, registering a SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling. In wet or dry conditions, the Advan Sport A/S Plus is consistent and predictable with circumferential grooves, lateral grooves, Z-shaped grooves, and Yokohama’s innovative Wavy Sipes, all working as a system to resist hydroplaning on wet pavement and provide mechanical grip and adhesion on dry roads for a traction score of 8.8. All in all, the Yokohama Advan Sport A/S Plus would be an excellent choice for a variety of sporty coupes, sedans, and crossovers.
5. Accelera Phi R - Good UHP All-Season tire
Now we come to the Phi R from Accelera, a great deal in an affordable all-season tire that offers sharp performance and year-round versatility. The Accelera Phi R is designed for cornering, steering, and braking that are more like what you’d expect of a UHP tire, with an asymmetric 3-rib design and stiff shoulder blocks. That was enough to mark up a respectable SimpleScore of 8.5 for handling. All-season grip is confident with a set of circumferential and lateral grooves along with a dense network of sipes, for a SimpleScore of 7.8 for traction. Accelera backs the Phi R with a 30,000 mile warranty, and we chalk up this tire with a 7.7 SimpleScore for longevity. It’s also worth noting that the casing and tread of the Accelera Phi R are designed for reduced rolling resistance and low noise, with its sipe pattern and tread pitch that’s redesigned to negate certain frequencies and keep highway noise to a minimum.
