By now you've probably heard about a few of the money-saving technologies that automakers are including in new vehicle models to help drivers save on gas. It's good to save money here and there, but you don't necessarily need a new car just to get better gas mileage. Here are a few things the U.S. Department of Energy says you can do to save on gas right now.

Tune your engine and save $0.13/Gallon

Need a tune-up? Heading to your certified technician can do more than just improve your vehicle’s performance. Keeping your engine in tune can improve your vehicle’s fuel economy by 4%, or $0.13 per gallon of gas.

Inflate your tires and save $0.10/Gallon

Do you know what the proper inflation pressure is for the tires on your vehicle? You won’t find it on the sidewall of your tires. Check the sticker on your driver’s side door jamb or your vehicle owner’s manual for the correct air pressure. Keeping your tires at the correct inflation pressure can improve your vehicle’s fuel economy by up to 3% or $0.10 per gallon of fuel. We recommend checking your tires at least once a month to keep them at the right air pressure.

Use the Right Motor Oil and save $0.07/Gallon

If you use your automaker’s recommended motor oil grade in your vehicle, you can improve your gas mileage by 1–2% or $0.03–$0.07 per gallon.

Did you do the math? Just by doing these three easy things, you can save yourself up to $0.30 per gallon. When you head in for your routine maintenance at your certified installer, they can easily help you make sure that your engine, tires, and motor oil are in the right condition for your vehicle. Not only will you notice better performance on the road, but you also might find that your wallet is a little heavier.
