  • Travelstar UN106

For most drivers of sedans, minivans, and crossovers, all-season tires make an ideal, versatile choice. There are all kinds of reasons why they make good sense: great wear properties with lengthy limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty coverage, year-round performance, capable handling, solid and composed road manners, low noise, and accommodating ride comfort. Not surprisingly, all-season tires are on the market at every price point you can imagine, from spendy premium-brand tires down to budget-priced tires from lesser-known brands.

The Travelstar UN106 is one of the more affordable all-season tires that’s available today. While many all-season tires have design features and construction that are pretty similar to each other, the Travelstar UN106 has some innovative design points that make it stand out a bit in the world of all-season tires. Let’s get in and take a closer look at what it has to offer with this Travelstar UN106 tire review:

    Features and Benefits

Here are some of the innovative design features and details that make the Travelstar UN106 a standout performer and great value in the arena of all-season tires:

    • The advanced silica-infused tread compound is designed for excellent wear properties and dependable traction on wet or dry roads
    • Stylish 1” whitewall design
    • M+S rated for winter conditions
    • Internal construction details include a polyester casing with two steel belts and a nylon cap ply for stability
    • Four wide circumferential grooves form a system with transverse grooves to enhance wet-weather performance and mitigate hydroplaning by efficiently routing water from the tire’s contact patch
    • Continuous center rib is designed for confident straight-line stability and road manners as well as quick and light steering response
    • Tread pitch is randomized and computer-tuned to keep road noise muted and disrupt certain frequencies and overtones

    Pros and Cons

    PROS:

    • Very affordable price point
    • Handling and cornering are steady and consistent
    • Road manners are stable and sedate
    • M+S rated for winter conditions

    CONS:

    • No limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty
    • Not good in heavier snow
    • Pattern noise can be louder on some pavement surfaces

SimpleTire’s view on Travelstar UN106 tires

    Travelstar UN106

Here at the SimpleTire team, the Travelstar UN106 has made a pretty good impression on us. In our opinion, this is a budget-priced tire that offers features and performance that far outweigh its low price.

Are you acquainted with SimpleScore? SimpleScore is a rating system that our team developed to assign a numerical value for the categories of handling, traction, and longevity, as well as an overall average SimpleScore for any given tire. We look at specs, review information and other data points, and then distill that down to a numerical score to give you a quick overview. For the Travelstar UN106, the SimpleScore numbers are:

    Travelstar UN106

    • Traction: 7.7
    • Handling: 7.8
    • Longevity: 7.6
    • Overall average SimpleScore: 7.5

The Travelstar UN106 is a tire that has a lot to like. Handling is controlled and precise even when pushed close to the limit, with few vices and little apparent tendencies toward understeer or oversteer. At highway speed, straight-line stability is secure and steady, and steering response and driver feedback are quick and accurate without being overly sensitive or twitchy. In wet road conditions, the Travelstar UN106 feels confident and capable; its braking performance and handling aren’t compromised much from what you’d experience on dry pavement.

Cornering ability might not be up to the standards you’d expect from a performance tire, but it’s certainly competent and precise. This indeed is tire doesn’t perform well in heavier snow, but that’s not what a tire like the Travelstar UN106 was designed for. We also should mention here that this tire doesn’t come with a limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty for mileage, and that’s not unusual for a tire at this price point.

Even on rough or uneven pavement surfaces, ride quality is soft and composed and the Travelstar UN106 would be a great choice for an affordable all-season tire, one that would make a great replacement tire for an older vehicle, one where you need tires but don’t want to empty out a bank account to do it. SimpleTire’s price on the Travelstar UN106 starts at $53.99 per tire.

Vehicles the Travelstar UN106 is a good replacement tire for

    • Honda CR-V
    • Nissan Pathfinder
    • Hyundai Tucson
    • Kia Telluride

I've had these Travelstar UN106 tires on my 1996 Buick Roadmaster for about 6 months now. I'm overall pleased with them. I wanted to wait a while to see how they did beyond my initial impressions. I've since driven on two long roadtrips and put 5k+ miles on. No perceptible treadwear yet. Ride and noise are fine. They don't pull right or left. Handling is so-so. These aren't performance tires or even the Michelin/BFGoodrich/etc name brand whitewall all seasons you used to be able to get in the [good] old days. On the upside, they are quite affordable. The biggest functional issue I was concerned about is a problem I had with the Hankook Optimos that had been on previously. Those tires rode very well but chronically had a problem with gentle sweeping turns (not on sharper 90 deg turns). It's hard to describe, but it felt for brief (second or less) intermittent bursts like the sidewall was going super soft. Like the automotive equivalent of your knees going wobbly. Very weird and not consistent. Wouldn't happen every time, but did it for the whole 10 years I had the tires. Tire pressure didn't make much difference. I even rebuilt my front suspension and it didn't make a difference. It was a minor problem, but disconcerting and made me really hate the tires which were otherwise quite good. I was initially worried when these new tires did it a few times shortly after getting them. But since going on a road trip and them getting fully broken in, I haven't had it happen at all. I like the look of the sidewalls better than the Optimos. They are pretty good looking tires, they look the part on an old school Buick. On the downside, the reviews that mentioned it's hard to keep the whitewalls white were confirmed. The whitewall has a tendency to yellow, especially on the fronts. I use Blechewhite on them which gets them pretty white, but one of the fronts struggles to get fully white even with liberal application. I might have to try SOS pads, which is what I used to do many years ago. The Optimos did not have that problem, whitewalls stayed pretty white and easily whitened with Blechewhite. Overall, these aren't the perfect tire but I would recommend them because I don't know what the perfect tire is today. I'd pay more for tires I knew were higher quality, but all the choices I've found in whitewall tires are basically cheap no-name brands with tradeoffs. I'm grateful we at least have some whitewalls in obsolete sizes still available for our dinosaur cars.

This is a good looking tire with a nice 9mm white wall strip for the 2003 to 2012 Lincoln Towncar. No doubt one of the most quiet tires I have used to date and also a very smooth ride. For those who drive on cobbled roads it definitely makes a difference for the better. The trade off is slightly more drag or rolling resistance than a harder tire designed for economy.

I have been buying these for years. I have them on my 2003 Town Car. They are very durable and are very good in all weather. The whitewall makes the car look great, it's very hard to find thin whitewall tires that fit the town car.

I ordered 4 tires online from what I thought was Simpletire web site. When my tires arrived 1 of them was so out of round that it could not be balanced properly. I attempted at return this defective tire to Simpletire with no success. They said I must go through ebay because the tires were actually purchased through them, so I contacted ebay to get a return authorization. E-bay said I must go through the e-bay team at Simpletire in order to return the tire. I called back and forth between Simpletire and E-bay for 20 days and they continued to point fingers at the other company. About the 5th day I ordered another tire from Simpletire so I could unmount the defective tire and get all my tires in balance. To date I still own a tire that can not be balanced. So I have purchased 5 tires and am only able to use 4 of them. Neither company will issue me a return authorization form to return the tire and get a refund for that defective tire. I now plan to turn this issue over to my son who is an attorney and attempt to get a full settlement to this issue. I plan to never purchase vehicle tires from this company again. Gary Kespohl
