I have not tested these on icy roads yet. Very comfortable for road travel. Tread ware never gets a 5 due to travelling on gravel roads.

Just like with drivers of sedans, minivans and crossovers, all-season tires make the most sense for most drivers of light trucks, vans, and SUVs due to year-round traction and performance. Even for drivers of 4WD-equipped pickups, most of their time is spent on pavement with little off-road hijinks going on, and that’s where such tires deliver the best balance of year-round grip, a quiet and refined ride, great wear properties, and capable handling. The latest in truck and SUV technology must take into account the weight, braking properties, center of gravity, ride quality and overall handling of today’s trucks and SUVs, and a tire like the Sumitomo Encounter HT was designed around all of those considerations.
At SimpleTire, it offers buyers a great deal as an all-season tire, light truck tire, but don’t just take us at our word on that. Let’s go in for a closer look with this Sumitomo Encounter HT review:
Features and Benefits
Here are some of the features and innovations that make the Sumitomo Encounter HT a strong performer and a great value in a light truck all-season tire:
- Non-directional all-season 5-rib tread pattern
- Circumferential and angled grooves work as a system to remove water from the tire’s contact patch and resist hydroplaning on wet roads
- Long-wearing advanced tread formulation helps boost wet-weather traction
- The dense network of sipes multiplies surface area for better traction and hundreds of biting edges slice through water and slush
- High tread depth for dependable traction and long wear
- 60,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty
- The tread pitch has been randomized and computer-tuned to suppress certain frequencies and resonances, keeping road noise to a minimum
- Curved shoulder grooves also help quieten the ride and enhance handling and road manners
- Internal construction includes a polyester casing with twin steel belts, full-width nylon overlay ply, 2-ply sidewall design and reinforced bead apex for improved stability at high speeds
Pros and Cons
PROS:
- Long-lasting wear
- Quiet and refined ride quality
- Great stability and road manners at highway speed
- Backed by a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty
- Handling is capable and predictable
- Great wet traction
CONS:
- Not good off-road
- Can be noisy on some pavement surfaces
- Not good in heavier snow or slush
SimpleTire’s view on Sumitomo Encounter HT tires
When it comes to mid-priced all-season tires for light trucks, vans and SUVs, there are so many choices on the market that it’s hard to know where to start. The Sumitomo Encounter HT is a great value and a great performer, though – a standout tire for its price point, offering features and value that you’d expect from other premium tires.
The all-season tread pattern of the T-rated Encounter HT does a great job of delivering confident traction on dry pavement, with short braking distances and minimum hydroplaning on wet roads as the groove system effectively cuts through standing water on pavement. In light snow, the Encounter HT’s sipe network digs in for dependable and consistent grip (although, like most all-season tires, it does fall short in several inches of snow). Ride quality is composed even on broken or irregular pavement, with the kind of refinement you’d expect from an automotive Grand Touring tire, and the Encounter HT’s internal construction does a great job of soaking up vibrations and irregularities before they can make their way to the passenger compartment or driver.
Handling with the Sumitomo Encounter HT is predictable and accurate, with a light and quick steering response that’s neither overly sensitive nor touchy. A 60,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty is value-added for the Sumitomo; it’s warranty coverage that’s about right for a tire in this price range, but considerably more than what some light truck tires offer.
Are you familiar with SimpleTire’s SimpleScore system? It’s the ratings method that the SimpleTire team developed to give you an at-a-glance idea of a tire’s strengths and weaknesses. We look at the tire’s spec sheet, reviews and other data points, then take that information and distill it to a 1-10 numerical value for the categories of traction, handling and longevity for any given tire, along with an overall average SimpleScore rating. For the Sumitomo Encounter HT, the SimpleScore numbers shake out like this:
Traction: 8.1 Handling: 8.0 Longevity: 8.0 Overall average SimpleScore: 7.7
With its combination of ride quality, wet or dry traction, confident handling, low noise and great, stable road manners, we feel that the Sumitomo Encounter HT would make a great choice in an all-season tire for a wide range of light trucks and SUVs.

I haven't mounted the tires yet, as the tires I received were almost 3 years old!!! So this review is mainly about the age of the tires I received and the SimpleTire tire age policy, instead of the tires themselves. Very disappointed in the age of the tires I received. All other tires I have bought from SimpleTire, and all other online tire places, have been very fresh tires...some within weeks of manufacture. I realize SimpleTires policy is to ship tires that are less than 4 years old, but the tires I received are almost 3 years old already (DOT code 2921...29th week of 2021). I chatted with customer service about my concerns and the only thing I got from them was the canned answers of their policy is to ship tires that are less than 4 years old and that I could return them, but they can't guarantee any tires I receive will have a more recent manufacture date. I asked about a partial refund, because of the age of the tires, but they refused and just reiterated I could return the tires (for a $20 shipping fee per tire). These tires will go on a truck that doesn't get driven much (less than 5K a year), so the tires will dry rot/crack and be unusable (safety issue) long before I wear them out. And based on my last tires, is about 6 years (even though I kept the tires covered and sprayed with 303 Protectant when not in use). The tires themselves look like good tires, as far as the tread pattern, tread depth, and treadwear (60K, supposedly). Hopefully, I can get more than 3-4 years out of the tires before they dry out, crack and become a safety issue (or worst case blow out and damage my vehicle and/or cause an accident). I guess I'll see. Strictly based on the age of the tires I received, I would not buy these tires again. If I could get newer/fresher tires, I would buy again.
THIS IS MY SECOND SET. I GOT 83000 ON MY FIRST SET. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE HIGHLY TIRES.
Bought these tires roughly 5 or 6 years ago and they're still on my car today have about 40,000 miles on them they wear really good. I live in Pennsylvania and they worked well in all weather. The only thing negative I can say about them is when I bought them they had an order to them that lasted for a week or two. Which wasn't a big deal. This is just if I had a nitpick. They're great tires and I would buy them again
2014 Ram 1500 Bighorn with 130,000 miles just about to replace my second set of Sumitomo HT 275/60/20 no complaints. My service writer at the dealer is pushing Michelin, not gonna have it. I live in South Florida and have yet to have an issue. Take a lot of trips to the Keys, they are quiet on I-95
So far so good. Have driven through monsoon rain at highway speeds and not a wobble. Ride is quite. Cornering is confident. Happy with the purchase at this point.
Very nice tires i live in alaska always wet or icy these handle very good on ice almost as good as blizzak tires which is crazy on my 97 f250 they held up one wreck in the persons truck i got em from and then in one my wrecks and now on my new 1992 7.3 f250 and have ran over glass countless times and over 6,000 miles on em and they still look as new as the came from the store
Idk why the discounts ???? The Tires are $158 the same price thay been everywhere else juat inflated the price to make it look like a real discount if you gonna discount doit for real dont bullshit
I've been very pleased with these tires on my Ram 1500. Treadwear is awesome, quiet. Would purchase again if available.
I am very well satisfied with these tires. I had them installed on my 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500. The price was incredible and shipping and installation went without a hitch. I am retired and don't drive that many miles but I use my truck to run errands, haul anything from wood to broken concrete and tow my 21' boat down the highway. Since I live in South Louisiana I can't rate the tires on winter traction but have had no problems in wet or dry conditions with or without my boat behind me. When it is time to replace these tires I will shop for them at Simple Tire again.
