Do you really need a winter tire? Consider your tires to be a set of clothes. There isn't a single fabric that is suitable for all the seasons. In the winter, woolen clothing is required; in the summer, cotton clothing is preferred. Consider your tires in the same light. There are different tires for the various seasons, and when the temperature drops significantly, you need winter tires.

The Nexen Winguard Winspike 3 is a studdable winter tire that is designed for use on sedans, CUVs, SUVs, and light trucks. Since they are studdable, they give sure-footed performance, and great traction in ice, slush, and snow.

However, is it the best tire for your car and your budget? Let's take a look at a review of Nexen Winguard Winspike 3 to see if it's the right tire for you.

    Features and Benefits

    Nexen Winguard Winspike 3

Due to ice, snow, and slush, winter driving can be challenging. However, if you have the best set of winter tires, which can provide classic winter traction on dry, wet, and snow-covered roads, then you need not be concerned. You can choose the right tires by learning the features and benefits of Nexen Winguard Winspike 3.

    • Solid winter traction: The Winguard Winspike 3 provides a firm grip that improves winter performance. With its numerous wave and step sipes, the directed tread pattern improves grip in winter conditions, including ice and snow. Furthermore, the placement of the high-density siping provides biting edges, further boosting the tire's exceptional performance.
    • Reduced hydroplaning: The angled grooves and robust tread blocks improve water and slush dispersal, preventing hydroplaning. As a result, the wet traction improves.
    • Solid handling: Zigzag positioning of the center tread blocks keeps the tire near to the road surface. As a result, the tire's steering response and driving stability increase. Because the structure is stabilized, quick and precise steering responses are assured. Big shoulder tread blocks with precise siping improve cornering ability by providing extra biting edges. Moreover, intricate siping design generates friction during braking, ensuring excellent braking performance even on snow and ice.
    • Studdable: As long as it is legal, these tires can be studded to increase traction under harsh winter conditions. These tires can be pinned with TSMI #12 studs where permitted, so please consult local laws and regulations before pinning your tires with studs.
    • Comfortable drive: For a comfortable driving, the tire closely follows the surface of the road thanks to the arrangement of the tread blocks and specific siping detail.

    Pros and Cons

    Nexen Winguard Winspike 3

So, is it a good fit for your sedans, CUVs, SUVs, or light trucks? Before giving our final opinion, let's first look at its Pros and Cons:

    • Winter tread pattern to enhance traction on icy roads and harsh winter weather conditions
    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified for use in cold weather ranging from moderate to severe winter weather conditions
    • Studdable with TSMI#12 studs, where permitted, for improved traction in harsh winter weather conditions
    • Angled grooves remove water, slush, and melting snow from the tread and reduce the risk of hydroplaning
    • Dense siping to improve traction
    • Directional tread pattern to enhance traction and stability

Despite having all of these features and benefits, the Nexen Winguard Winspike 3 tire could be better in some areas, such as:

    • Cannot be used when temperatures are consistently above 45 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Not backed by a limited manufacturer tread life warranty
    • Noisy when pinned with studs

SimpleTire’s view on Nexen Winguard Winspike 3 tires

If you're looking for a unique winter tire, the Nexen Winguard Winspike 3 is a good choice. Consider Nexen Winguard Winspike 3 tires if you seek solid traction and performance in slick, icy and snowy situations.

I took a chance on these because of Black Friday and was able to get four tires at around $340 which is a steal since they are usually around $600. I am so glad I bought these tires! They aren't noisy at all and grip the snowy New England roads quite well. I think they are also great in the rain. Buy these tires, you won't be sorry!

AWD Audis are heavy sedans that are notoriously hard on tires. These tires have been excellent. Low noise, even wear and great winter traction. For a lower price point tire they are very good.

These do well overall. Quiet and smooth ride on dry roads. Didn't notice any compromise in wet conditions. Grip well on snow and about as well as can be expected on icy patches. I have these on a Cadillac DeVille that isn't a daily driver so I can't comment on wear yet. I mount permanently on dedicated wheels and expect to get many winters out of them.

I researched tires for hours. First narrowing down the options, then finding best price. I did a live chat at about 11 pm EST on SIMPLE TIRE. Representative was very helpful. I had the tires mounted and installed at Mavis Tire in Amherst,NY. While I was in the showroom they had these tires on display so I price checked. The tires were $55/each more than what I paid at Simple Tire. That amounts to saving $220. They were shipped and I rectum in a few days. Overall great experience. The tires are great on a Honda CRV on Buffalo winter.

My 2011 manual Audi S4 really notices the difference with colder weather snow tires as opposed to my summer tires driving

Bought these tires earlier this year and had them installed in late October. Reviews indicated they were good in snow. In truth, the worst winter tire I've had in 50 Years of driving!!!! On January 5 and 6/2024, we had our first small snow storm of the season with 3" on Saturday and 3 " more on Sunday. On Saturday, these tires barely made it up our hill. On Sunday, these tires were slipping and sliding and could even make it up my lane way. These tires have less than 400 miles on them. Literally these tires are worse than summer or all-seasons in the snow. My recommendation get Bridgestone Blizzaks or Perilli's and stear clear of Nexen tires.
