Electric vehicles (EVs), hybrids and plug-in hybrids put a unique set of demands on tires. EVs are heavier by several hundred pounds with an altered center of gravity due to their battery pack, and tires need to be robust enough to capably handle that extra weight. They also need to be designed to deal with the instantaneous torque and power of EVs, and need to have far lower rolling resistance in order to get the most range and most battery life out of the vehicle’s drivetrain. Since EVs don’t have internal combustion engines (ICE), that means no engine noise and no exhaust note to intrude into the passenger cabin, so EV tires need to be as dead-quiet as possible to help assure a serenely quiet ride on the highway.

Hankook’s iON family of tires are their first full lineup of tires that are designed from the ground up specifically for EVs. From plug-in hybrids to mild hybrids to full-on battery-powered EVs, the iON family of tires is designed to bring out the best in these vehicles for optimized driving performance. Loaded with innovations and forward-thinking designs, the Hankook iON lineup incorporates some of the most advanced tire technology around to lead the way for all kinds of electric vehicles with sophisticated design elements and sharp, uncompromising performance. The result is a thrilling complement to their overall driving dynamics, consistent, confident performance, and superb value for drivers.

Hankook iON ev AS IH01

The iON ev AS IH01 sets a benchmark of performance and quality for all-season EV tires. The iON ev AS IH01 incorporates Hankook’s Sound Absorber technology, a layer of foam in the tire’s internal plies that helps soak up vibrations, harshness and noise from the highway. Hankook’s innovative next-generation ProGrip tread formulation helps to deliver low rolling resistance along with great wear properties and outstanding wet-weather traction, thanks to its blend of silica and polymers and a reimagined curing process. The optimized contact patch of the iON ev AS IH01 delivers great braking performance and long, even wear by ensuring consistent weight distribution and ground pressure. Handling, steering response and cornering ability are all outstanding thanks to the iON ev AS IH01’s internal construction, designed for the extra weight of EVs as well as providing the rigidity needed for confident handling. With a system of circumferential and lateral grooves along with Hankook’s 3D GripKontrol sipes, the iON ev AS IH01 is ready for year-round performance, earning it the M+S certification for mud and snow traction. Hankook stands by the iON ev AS IH01 with a 50,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty.

Hankook iON evo AS SUV IH01A

Many of today’s electric SUVs are tremendously powerful, and the Hankook iON evo AS SUV IH01A is designed to connect all that power and torque with the pavement. With its optimized footprint and silica-rich tread compound, the iON evo AS SUV IH01A has glue-like grip for precise and accurate cornering and braking ability. Like other tires in the iON line, the iON evo AS SUV IH01A employs Hankook’s Sound Absorber technology of knurled tread grooves, a foam rubber tire ply layer, and a randomized multi-pitch tread design for as much as a 29% reduction in cabin noise. A system of circumferential and lateral grooves with Hankook’s GripKontrol sipes help the iON evo AS SUV IH01A with confident year-round grip, earning it the M+S rating for mud/snow traction. Internally, the iON evo AS SUV IH01A’s EV contour construction helps with rigidity for crisp handling and cornering ability. Hankook covers the iON evo AS SUV IH01A with a 50,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty.

Hankook iON evo IK01

Designed specifically for high-performance EVs, the iON evo IK01 takes the design features from other tires in the iON family and fine-tunes them for enhanced cornering ability, shorter braking distances, and steering response that’s quick and light. The iON is designed with Hankook’s silica-rich ProGrip tread compound for great adhesion to the road and long, even wear, and its reduced rolling resistance and lightweight construction allow drivers to get up to 9% more range from a single battery charge. Its all-season tread includes circumferential and angled grooves, a solid center rib for enhanced stability and road manners, and GripKontrol sipes for dependable traction (earning the M+S rating for mud/snow grip). The ride quality of the iON evo IK01 is serene and quiet thanks to Hankook’s noise reduction package of computer-tuned tread pitch, knurled tread grooves, and a sound-absorbing layer of foam rubber in the subtread, helping to keep cabin noise down by as much as 9 dB.

Hankook iON i*cept (IW01A)

EVs need traction and performance in winter conditions just like any other vehicle, and the Hankook iON icept (IW01A) is designed specifically for winter driving. The directional winter tread of the iON icept (IW01A) features circumferential and angled grooves for grip and water evacuation in snow and slush, along with a dense pattern of angled sipes to slice through snow and slush on the roads, earning it the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service. The specialized winter tread compound of the iON icept (IW01A) is designed for low rolling resistance to maximize the battery life and range of EVs, yet it stays flexible for traction in subfreezing weather. Like all winter tires, the iON icept (IW01A) should not be used if temperatures are above 40-45 degrees, as that softer winter tread formulation will wear prematurely. Its tread pitch is randomized and computer tuned to cancel certain frequencies and overtones, helping to assure a quiet ride.
