When the going gets rough off-road with deep mud, rocks, roots, and tough obstacles, you need a tire that doesn’t just deliver unstoppable traction but is also durable enough to hold up to punishment. The Geolandar X-MT is at the top of the heap of Yokohama’s off-road-oriented Geolandar line and is ready for the toughest rigors of off-road utility without giving up day-to-day practicality on the pavement.
Features and Benefits
Like you might guess, the X in “X-MT” stands for Extreme, and that’s what the Geolandar X-MT is designed for. Here are just a few of the design features that make the Geolandar X-MT such a standout:
- Pincer-like side blocks for extra biting edges to enhance lateral traction in ruts or over rocks and obstacles.
- Staggered-pair tread block design with an extra-deep 21/32” tread depth that protects the casing from punctures, delivers great traction in soft soil or mud and provides long wear.
- Stone ejectors built into tread grooves to protect the casing from rocks, stones, twigs, and other damage
- High void ratio, meaning plenty of open space between tread blocks and lugs for good cleanout of mud and debris as the tire spins
- Durable, high-density triple-polymer tread compound for extra damage resistance
- Computer-tuned tread pitch to cancel out noise for a surprisingly quiet ride on pavement
- Multiple sidewall plies for extra durability against punctures and a higher load carrying capacity
- High turnup carcass with steel belts, full-width spiral-wound nylon cap layer that further increases strength
- Wide range of sizes for various fitments, 17” to 20”
Pros and Cons
PROS:
- Extremely durable construction
- Capable of aired-down performance as low as 9-12 psi for rock crawling
- Easily sheds mud and debris as the tire turns so there’s always a clear section of tire to dig in
- Tenacious traction in mud, sand, gravel, loose dirt, rocks, and other off-road obstacles
- Looks great on a variety of trucks, especially those with extra ground clearance
CONS:
- Not M+S rated, but performs well in snow and slush
- Tread pattern is quieter than most mud-terrain tires, but can be noisy on some pavement surfaces
- Workmanship warranty, but no limited manufacturer tread life warranty

So far so good. I have to see how these tires will do in snow this coming winter. As of now I'm happy with them and have already recommended them to my fellow off roaders.
I have a set mounted on my 2004 Ford Excursion. In the past I've used Nitto Mud Grapplers in the same size. So far these Yokohamas are better. The road noise is reduced on pavement and they don't dryrot within months of use.
Great all around tires. Light and narrow but not too skinny. Quiet on the road. Great offroad, especially on rocks. Clean out well. I run them at 9psi in front and 8psi in rear, they hook up on everything. They also measure very true to size. Only bigger 40" ive saw is the Nitto. Two tiny gripes... I wish the tread depth was slighty deeper. And I wish the shoulder lugs were more aggressive.
I've been running the Geolandar X-MT tires for a couple thousand miles now. They are 40x13.5-17s on beadlock wheels. I run balancing rings but otherwise they have not been balanced and have no balancing issues. They run great and are not noisey. Awesome road manners and excellent grip off-road. I find myself on gravel/dirt roads regularly and I love how these tires have huge voids between the lugs. Chunks of rock and gravel do not get stuck between the lugs. (Rocks aren't getting ejected from the tires at 60mph!). They have amazing grip off road in dry and wet conditions. Highly recommended
Yokohama Geolanders. Quietest off road tires I've had in 35 years. Quieter than most on road tires too. Great on mud, snow, and granite. Better than bf Goodrich mk2/3s in all categories and as good in mud and granite but quieter and much better in snow than Goodyear wrangler mtr's. Will get these for sure next time.
Great tire very low road noise for a mud tire. Does great off road. They balanced good.
These are great tires, they are so cool looking, they do great Offroad and I was amazed by the road noise....I run these tires on my 05 Rubicon and I run Nitto Ridge grapplers on my gladiator these Geolanders are way quieter Jeff Boston Ma
This is my first set since they discontinued the MT+. Having owned 15 sets of the Mt+ I was a hard sell. These are a heavier ply, hence the more rigid ride. Handling in any weather is beautiful, as with traction. They are slightly louder than the Mt+. Wear is a major improvement. The MT+ would feather on the outer edges as steering tires and perfectly flat as drivers. These have a very nice wear as steering tires and perfectly flat as drivers....great improvement. They are my new "go to" for my Ram. Just bought a set for my 1948 Willys CJ2A too. I give them a solid 9 out of 10 possible.
Best tires ever will be buying them again
