  • Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 G018

The Geolandar family of all-terrain light truck tires from Yokohama has been a favorite with drivers everywhere for decades. The Geolandar product line has rightly built a reputation for top quality, durability, innovation, and the right balance between tough, tenacious off-road performance and civilized, composed behavior on the street (without making any real sacrifice in either realm).

The Geolandar A/T4 G0188 is one of the latest iterations of the Geolandar line, and it’s more or less an upgrade from the popular Geolandar A/T G015 model, building on all the successful ideas of that proven tire line. With its great balance of off-road toughness and highway manners, it’s a real winner. Let’s go in and take a closer look at this Yokohama Geolandar A/T G018 review:

    Features and Benefits

    Geolandar A/T4 G018

Here are some of the design features and innovations that make the Geolandar A/T4 G018 from Yokohama a great performer and fantastic value in an all-terrain tire for light trucks and SUVs:

    • Optimized internal construction and tread design delivers great on-road comfort and wear properties
    • Zigzag grooves help to resist hydroplaning by diverting even large amounts of water away from the tire’s contact patch on wet roads
    • Aggressive center tread blocks are designed for off-road traction on a variety of terrains
    • Yokohama’s Edgetec groove system and a dense network of 3D sipes aid in dependable grip in off-road conditions or deep snow
    • 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service
    • Single-pitch shoulder block helps keep road noise to a minimum
    • The tread pitch of center blocks is randomized and computer-tuned to cancel certain frequencies and overtones, keeping road noise to a minimum
    • Covered by 55,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty
    • Extensive range of sizes from 15” to 22” for a variety of fitments
    • Yokohama’s Enduro Compound is custom blended for durability with a mix of carbon black, natural rubber, and triple polymers, helping to resist cuts, chips, and punctures and delivering longer mileage
    • Yokohama’s Geo-Shield internal construction includes a high turn-up carcass, multiple sidewall plies, and a full nylon cap for durability on or off the pavement
    • Mud and stone ejectors in the base of tread grooves rid the tread of rocks and debris to protect the casing and enhance traction

    Pros and Cons

SimpleTire’s view on Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 G018 tires

    Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 G018

Trucks and SUVs have come a long way in design and performance in the last 30 years, and the Yokohama Geolandar line has evolved right with them. The Geolandar A/T4 G018 is designed for the weight, torque, horsepower, handling performance, and overall driving dynamics of today’s trucks, and it’s showing itself to be a great fit.

The Geolandar A/T4 G018 is surprisingly composed and confident on the street or highway, with noise levels about what you’d expect with an automotive all-season tire and a little firm but forgiving ride. Yokohama’s Geo-Shield construction technology has long been a key feature of Geolandar tires, with its reinforced sidewall that stands up to the roughest treatment without flinching, resisting cuts, punctures, chips, and scrapes.

Not long ago, a few members of the SimpleTire team could take a trip to Central Texas to test-drive the Geolandar AT/4 G018 (mounted on Ford Broncos) over four trail modules with 1 to 1.5 hours on each trail. They were impressed with its control, durability, and tenacious grip, quote:

I thought that they handled phenomenally well, rock crawling, off-roading through loose rock & mud, riverbeds, etc... the time I got to let loose was the dirt speed track which I intentionally tried to fishtail the thing, and it stuck like glue

The stone ejectors on the Yokohama do a great job of self-cleaning the tread of mud and debris, ensuring that there’s always a clear section to dig in as the wheel turns. Stability and road manners on the highway are first-rate thanks to a rigid internal design that cuts down on tread squirm during hard maneuvers, and that robust center block design gives the Yokohama admirably solid straight-line stability. Finally, the Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 G018 features two separate sidewall designs, letting the driver select which sidewall will be flipped toward the outside to customize the truck’s aesthetics. Bottom line: the Geolandar A/T4 G018 has been anticipated for some time, and whether it’s rocks, mud, snow, sand, loose dirt, or a quiet boulevard, this is a tire that’s up to the task.

Vehicles the Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 G018 is a good replacement tire for

While the Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 G018 isn’t featured as OEM on any vehicles (yet), it would make a great replacement tire on trucks like these:

    • Toyota Tacoma
    • Land Rover Range Rover Defender
    • Nissan Titan
    • RAM 1500
    • Dodge Durango
    • Ford Bronco
    • Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    • GMC Sierra 2500
    • Jeep Wrangler
