  • Avid Ascend LX

Founded over a century ago, Yokohama is an expert tire company that’s based out of Japan. One of the oldest and most respected tire brands in the world, Yokohama has been consistent in delivering a range of exceptional tires for all types of vehicles and specializes in all-season, ultra-high-performance, all-terrain, mud terrain, and winter tires. The durability and long tread life of tires is a specialty of Yokohama that has been continued in Avid Ascend LX, which is an all-season tire that’s designed for use on passenger cars such as coupes, sedans, CUVs, SUVs, and minivans. However, do Avid Ascend LX tires provide reliable and comfortable driving experience in all weather conditions? We’ll find out in this Yokohama Avid Ascend LX review.

    Features and Benefits

All-season tires are designed to offer riders excellent traction year-round, which means they’re built for use in hot, wet, and cold weather conditions. They are also reliable in light snow conditions and are primarily driven on paved roads. As an all-season tire, Yokohama designed the Avid Ascend LX using the latest technology and an advanced tread compound that is focused on offering drivers reliable traction in every weather condition while also offering a long tread life. Let’s take a look at the detailed view of features and benefits of the tire:

    • Dry Grip and Smooth Traction: While most all-season tires are not designed to give excellent driving performance on dry roads, the Avid Ascend LX is designed with a symmetrical tread pattern and an advanced L-2 tread compound to challenge the norm. The improved cornering grip and the short stopping distance make Avid Ascend LX a reliable choice.
    • Handling: The linear design of the Avid Ascend LX helps drivers to accurately estimate the direction of their turn to offer good handling.
    • Wet Grip and Snow Traction: The wide circumferential grooves, lateral grooves, symmetric tread pattern, and advanced L-2 rubber compound offer the driver a higher wet grip by boosting hydroplaning resistance without compromising on tread life. While the Avid Ascend LX is not a winter tire, it offers good control in light snow conditions.
    • Ride Comfort and Noise: Yokohama has designed the Avid Ascend LX with a sidewall that’s adequately soft and hard to provide drivers with a comfortable ride. Moreover, the Avid Ascend LX is not loud, even in long commutes, which adds up to its list of features.

Available in 15 to 18-inch tire sizes, the Yokohama Avid Ascend LX offers a remarkable limited manufacturer tread life warranty of 85,000 miles.

    Pros and Cons

So, should you buy a set of Yokohama Avid Ascend LX tires or look elsewhere? Let’s first drill down its positives and negatives before putting our view in the end.

    • The tire offers reliable longitudinal traction and good cornering grip on dry roads
    • Peace of mind as it comes with the manufacturer warranty of up to 85,000 miles
    • Good braking on dry roads, with exceptional smooth ride
    • A specialized L-2 tread compound for longer tread life and a higher wet grip

While Yokohama makes a good claim about Avid Ascend LX’s performance, some shortcomings may divide opinions.

    • Slightly more expensive than some competitor’s tires
    • Not ideal for use in moderate to severe winter weather conditions
    • While available in a wide range of sizes, the Avid Ascend LX does not come in many truck specific fitments.

These tires are way better than the Michelins Energy or Primacy. Tread is more aggressive and the staggered in tread grooves grip really good on wet Las Vegas roads (which are usually oil slicks when it rains, when we get any). I would choose these over Michelin or Hankook any day. Are on my 2018 Ford Fusion.
