What are you looking for in an all-terrain tire? Ideally, you’d like a tire that’s durable enough to go off-road with confidence, but one that’s also still civilized on pavement, with good road manners, strong handling and braking performance, plus low noise and a comfortable ride. The ideal all-terrain tire would be designed for great traction in mud, sand, gravel, loose dirt, and other off-road conditions, but would also be rated for winter traction. You’d probably also be looking for long, even wear, internal construction that delivers resilience and good stability at highway speed, and a generous treadwear warranty.

That’s quite a list of expectations, when you see it all laid out that way. Is it too much to hope for in a tire? Well, the Toyo Open Country A/T III is a good candidate to meet all of those expectations.

So is this the tire you’re looking for? Let’s take a closer look with this Toyo Open Country A/T III review.

    Features and Benefits

    Toyo Open Country A/T III

Here’s a few of the features and benefits that make the Toyo Open Country A/T III a great value in an all-terrain tire for light trucks, Jeeps, SUVs, and crossovers:

    • Advanced rubber compound is cut-and-chip resistant and provides solid wet-weather handling and braking properties
    • Evenly-distributed void area in the tread is designed for traction in a wide variety of conditions, with good self-cleaning of mud, snow, slush, gravel, debris
    • Casing is designed for extra reinforcement and rigidity on tread blocks for improved handling and high-speed stability
    • Lateral grooves and 3D sipes for hundreds of extra biting edges to deliver good wet-weather traction for cornering, braking, acceleration
    • Stone ejectors built into tread grooves promote self-cleaning for consistent traction and to protect the casing from damage
    • Staggered shoulder lugs boost lateral traction off-road
    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service
    • Available in P-Metric and LT Metric sizes, and with a flotation design
    • Outlined white letter sidewall, on select sizes, for stylish looks
    • Sizes up to 22” for a wide range of fitments
    • Backed by a 50,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty for LT and flotation sizes, and 65,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty for P/Euro-Metric sizes
    • Aggressive tread design and overall appearance looks great on a wide range of vehicles

    Pros and Cons

So, is this Toyo tire the right choice for your ride and budget? Before you decide, let’s take a look at the tire’s strengths:

    PROS:

    • Wet-weather, dry-weather traction are outstanding
    • Very durable
    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified for winter performance
    • Good treadwear coverage
    • Affordable
    • Eye-catching appearance

Unfortunately, no tire is perfect and that’s true for the Open Country A/T III too:

    CONS:

    • A little noisy
    • Handling on pavement is predictable but not exactly nimble
    • Not the most fuel efficiency tire

SimpleTire’s view on Toyo Open Country A/T III tires

    Toyo Open Country A/T III

If you’re looking for a tire that’s tough and durable with dependable, consistent traction in a wide variety of off-road situations, the Toyo Open Country A/T III might be just what you need.

This is a tire that’s great on wet or dry pavement as well, with good stability and on-center road manners on the highway. The outlined white letter sidewall option lends a classic look to a wide variety of trucks and SUVs, and the Toyo Open Country A/T III’s 50,000 (or 65,000) mile treadwear coverage is hard to beat. Additionally, the Open Country A/T III’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating isn’t exactly easy to come by – the tire industry sets the bar pretty high for that winter certification – but it means you can count on this tire to get you through deep snow and slush in the dead of winter.

Yes, the Toyo Open Country A/T III is a little on the noisy side, but that’s to be expected with many all-terrain tires. We feel that the pluses of this next-generation all-terrain tire for light trucks and SUVs far outweigh the negatives, and that you’ll be happy with the Open Country A/T III if you’re in the market for an all-terrain tire.

I've only put about 2,000 miles on them so far but they ride excellent and are really quiet for an all terrain tire.

Just Purchased a set of Toyo Open country A/T III's (285/70r17) for my 2026 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road. I purchased these over the more aggressive looking BF Goodrich All Terrain KO3's or the Nitto Ridge Grapplers for their well deserved reputation for reliability and good road manners on pavement. And, based on the stock photos provided on most websites, they appeared to have just enough sidewall lugs/shoulder cleats/biting edges to give them that rugged off road look I wanted. Not as much as the other options but just enough.... However in reality those lugs/shoulder cleats/biting edges barely exist on the actual tire. What little there is is painfully thin, and a lot of it is just a suggestive outline on what is otherwise a more or less smooth sidewall. See the attached photos. The lugs/shoulder cleats/biting edges are clearly less pronounced than how they appear in the stock photos provided. Of course, by the time I realized this, the tires were already mounted and I owned them, so there is no turning back now. I'll eventually make my peace with them (I have to, they were $1442 mounted, and my understanding is they last forever), but every time I pass by another truck with a sick set of aggressive looking offroad tires I am experiencing pangs of regret. I just wish they looked like they did in the stock photos on the website. Is that wrong? I dunno....

I've got about 1000 miles on my new Toyo open country a/t 3 285/75/17 load range C on my 24 Toyota Tacoma Trd off-road hybrid and absolutely love them! I upgraded from a 33" Nitto ridge grappler to these 34" toyos. I'm the averaging the same 20 mpg around town. They are quiet and feel planted going around curves. This is my first experience with toyos and definitely not my last.

I have a set of these in 10 ply made in USA 285/60r20's on a 2018 f150. They are hands down the best tires I've ever owned. I tow trailers up to 10,000 lbs with this truck a couple times a month. The truck has been elk hunting in Colorado 6 times on nasty forest service roads, deep snow and rocky trails. The tires are just bullet proof. Here's the kicker, I currently have 127,000 miles on this set. I rotate them pretty religiously and my truck is properly aligned. They wear like iron. Even at 127k they are not bald at all but getting pretty thin. For the first 80k or so they had very good wet road traction but as they got thin they started getting a little sketchy in hard rain. I tried to order a set of 6 ply's for my wife's jeep but they were made in Asia and were not the same tire at all so I returned them. This review is only for the USA made 10 plys.

I've always had Toyo mud terrains but I got tired of them wearing it out so fast and also they're louder than you'd like a tire to be especially towards the end of the thread life. So I decided to go with the all terrain and it was a night and day difference! My jeep gladiator drove smoother, more responsive steering and breaking and much quieter than when I had the same tire set up in mud terrains. The all terrains almost look as aggressive as mud terrains. Overall super happy with my purchase and no regrets!

The AT3 performs well in rain and light snow/ice. The tread pattern is smooth and not noisy. Compared to other brands of the same load rating it's decently light
