  • Let’s say you have a subcompact or a small crossover that’s got some years and some miles on it. You’re looking for an all-season tire, but you don’t want to spend a lot of money in the process. There are lots of choices out there when it comes to affordable all-season tires for your situation, but a lot of them are a “you get what you pay for” situation.

If this sounds like you, then you might want to consider the Thunderer City R202. This is an affordable all-season tire that’s a great choice for commuters and daily drivers who don’t want or need tires that will cost hundreds of dollars before it’s over with.

So what is it about the tire that makes it such a great alternative? Let’s break it down in this Thunderer City R202 review:

    Features and Benefits

All-season tires are engineered to perform in dry, wet, and light winter weather conditions, and Thunderer specifically engineered this tire with those conditions in mind. Here’s what the tire has within it to offer solid performance year-round:

    • Tread compound engineered for long life, dependable traction
    • Jointless spiral wound nylon cap ply over two steel belts, for stability and ride comfort
    • Tread pitch is randomized and computer-tuned to help keep road noise low
    • 4-rib all-season tread pattern with deep circumferential grooves to evacuate water and resist hydroplaning
    • Dense network of sipes and lateral/angled grooves enhance wet-weather traction and dry braking performance
    • Tread blocks and notched shoulder designed for cornering and steering response

    Pros and Cons

So, is this the right tire for you and your budget? Let’s take a look at it’s strengths:

    PROS:

    • Affordable
    • Good wet and dry performance
    • Competent, predictable handling

No tire is perfect, and that’s true for the City R202 as well.

    CONS:

    • Could have better traction in deep snow
    • Could be quieter
    • No tread life warranty

SimpleTire’s view on Thunderer City R202 tires

If you’re in the market for a tire like the Thunderer City R202, chances are you already know what you’re looking for. You just need a tire for a daily driver, one that’s not going to break your checking account and is going to deliver the kind of performance and value you need. When you get down to that price point, though, there are some tires that just aren’t really up to the job.

Not the case with the Thunderer City R202. This is a great deal in an affordable all-season tire, and it’s available in a wide range of sizes for various fitments. We’re sure this will be a great tire for your needs. That being said, the lack of warranty might be a drawback for some drivers.

Vehicles the Thunderer City R202 is a good replacement tire for

All-season tires are the most commonly used tires in the U.S. thanks to their ability to perform year-round. That makes them a frequent choice for many of today’s most popular vehicles. If you drive a Buick Encore, Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler Pacifica, Fiat 500, Ford Fusion, GMC Acadia, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Sorrento, MINI Cooper Clubman, Nissan Kicks, Toyota Camry, or Volkswagen Passat and need an affordable all-season tire that offers better-than-expected performance, then the Thunderer City R202 might be right for you.

I got these for my 1974 and 1979 MG Midget as a basic no frills tire. I like the compound and the tread, no problems so far.

Bought these as a best current option for an early Lotus Europa (not too many suppliers of this size with reasonable performance characteristics these days). The 420-A-A UTQG rating is borne out by the handling, and I have already recommended them to others with cars needing the 155/80 size.
