I bought 3 H rated tires sized to save money by matching the unused spare, even though the S rated original tires wore to the tread bars in only 33,500 miles on a new truck. Hopefully, the H rated will wear better! After this set, I doubt I'll buy General's again. I'll certainly insist they not be installed on any new vehicle I purchase! The OEM tire life was terrible. However, this purchase experience from Simple Tire was awesome!--I'll definitely buy from them again.

Owned by Continental AG, General Tire is a century-old tire manufacturer that makes tires for passenger cars, coupes, sedans, CUVs, SUVs, Jeeps, light trucks, performance cars, and commercial vehicles. General Tire utilizes its years of technological prowess in making exceptional tires that offer high value to its customers. Its tires are known for their robust construction and meet the expectations of American drivers. The General AmeriTrac is a highway-terrain, all-season tire that’s designed for use on SUVs and light trucks. The tire is engineered to offer better year-round traction, and is specially optimized to perform in light winter weather conditions alongside offering excellent performance in wet conditions. This tire is also mud and snow (M+S) certified, making it good for use in challenging and wintry conditions. Various innovative technologies make the handling, ride, and road manners of this tire as responsive as a passenger car tire. There are so many other great things that boost the performance of this tire, which we have discussed in this General AmeriTrac tire review. Let’s go over them and learn about the tire’s true capabilities.
Features and Benefits
All-season tires are optimized to perform in dry and wet conditions, and also provide solid grip in light winter weather. The General AmeriTrac has these year-round performing capabilities but, additionally, the tire is optimized to perform better in mud and snow. So, let’s go over its features and benefits and learn more about its potential.
- Solid year-round grip and traction – The tire features a special symmetric tread design that provides a confident driving experience in differential conditions and ensures better grip in dry, wet, and winter weather. The wide circumferential grooves present on the tread improve water channeling and avoid the chances of hydroplaning by remarkably eliminating water from the footprint area. Additionally, the M+S certification also indicates the tire’s use as a rugged all-weather tire as it is optimized for drives in mud and snow.
- Enhanced durability and longer wear – The durable internal structure of the AmeriTrac features twin steel belts, which stabilize the tread elements, thus ensuring even and longer wear. These steel belts also reduce the chances of tire deformation under driving pressure and ensure that the tire performs to the fullest of its ability.
- Better comforts and noise-free drives – The tread elements and the internal structure of the AmeriTrac keep the vibration and noise levels low. The polyester body cord present in the internal structure absorbs the driving shocks and facilitates comfortable drives. Similarly, this tire's tread pattern is designed in such a way that the soundwaves do not pass through the tread elements and generate noise.
- Improved stability and steering responsiveness – The independent tread blocks on the AmeriTrac’s tread pattern improve road grip, stability, and steering responsiveness. These tread blocks allow the tire to maintain constant contact with the surface and provide better steering precision, thus enhancing the handling and controllability year-round.
- Stylish design – The AmeriTrac isn’t just tuned to provide better year-round performance but is also developed to attract enthusiasts with its stylish design and complement the aesthetics of your vehicle. The raised letters on the sidewall and an aggressive tread pattern enhance the sportiness of the vehicle.
The General AmeriTrac is available in a 17-inch rim size, which is LT235/80R17. General doesn’t offer any limited manufacturer tread life warranty on the purchase of this tire, but its adequate durability ensures a longer service life.

This tire excels on various fronts and contributes to a better year-round performance. That being said, it is crucial for the purchasers to know the negatives to make a well-informed decision:

- No limited manufacturer tread life warranty is offered.
SimpleTire’s view on General AmeriTrac tires
If you need a tire that’s an ‘all-weather’ sibling and has the capability to perform in dry and wet conditions very well, alongside performing in light winter weather conditions, then the General AmeriTrac can be a great choice. That being said, it isn’t the best of the options for areas that witness moderate to extreme winter weather.
The stability and handling of this tire are admirable and, likewise, its traction and grip are much better than the counterparts in dry and wet conditions. Although it isn’t offered with any limited manufacturer tread life, it serves for a longer tenure as compared to its peers. The durability standards of the tire are average, and the braking performance isn’t great, especially on wet and snow-covered surfaces.
It can be called a better version of an all-season tire, and if you are looking for an all-weather tire or a tire that performs very well in moderate to extreme winter weather conditions, then this isn’t the tire for you.
The General AmeriTrac is positioned against the likes of the Kumho Crugen HT51, Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse HT, BlackHawk Hiscend-H HT-01, and Sumitomo Trail Climber HT II.
