It is now a part of ZAFCO International Group, and focuses on offering high-quality tires to its customers. The Armstrong Desert Dog MT is a mud-terrain tire made for use on SUVs, light trucks, and Jeeps. It is built to withstand challenging off-road conditions and provides optimum grip, traction, and pulling power. Armstrong has incorporated various advanced technologies and features to offer drivers a really good off-roading experience.

Let’s go over this Armstrong Desert Dog MT tire review and find out if this tire really has some impeccable capabilities to outperform its peers.

    Features and Benefits

The Armstrong Desert Dog MT is a mud-terrain tire with year-round performance capabilities. It can sail through mud, dirt, gravel, and sand, and can even climb rocks to give you a complete adrenaline rush. Let’s have a look at some of the good features of this mud-terrain tire and find out how they benefit in terms of performance.

    • Better handling and increased durability – The tread of the Desert Dog MT features zigzag-shaped stone ejectors situated between tread blocks to avoid damage from stones and other objects, thus providing better handling and increased durability.
    • Improved grip, traction, and pulling power – This tire features Tuff Tusk tread blocks for improved grip, traction, and pulling power on mud and other challenging terrains.
    • Enhanced protection against shocks – The solid 3-ply polyester construction and rugged sidewall blocks of this tire provide enhanced protection against shocks from off-road obstacles.
    • Superior self-cleaning abilities and off-road traction – The wide-angled shoulder scallops of this tire are designed with a higher void ratio to ensure superior self-cleaning abilities and improved wet and off-road traction.
    • Protection against wear and tear – The special tread compound of the Armstrong Desert Dog MT is optimized for protection against wear and tear, and also provides a better grip on rocks and slippery surfaces.

The Armstrong Desert Dog MT is offered in 17 to 20-inch rim sizes. This means that this tire is compatible with most pickups, SUVs, and Jeeps. That being said, this mud-terrain tire isn’t backed by any tread life warranty. However, the tire brand offers a limited warranty valid for up to 6 years from the date of tire purchase if there are any defects due to workmanship or materials subject to certain terms and conditions.

    Pros and Cons

With all the key features and benefits of the Desert Dog MT discussed, let’s understand what are the positives and negatives of this tire. Let’s look at the positives first:

    • This tire is optimized for better longevity
    • Advanced technologies ensure resistance against wear and tear, and provide a solid grip on rocky and slippery surfaces
    • Good when it comes to riding on muddy terrains
    • Aggressive design enhances the cosmetic appeal
    • Tread is optimized for increased damage resistance

Unfortunately, no tire is perfect and this mud-terrain tire also has some negatives:

    • Some peers offer better traction on challenging surfaces
    • Handling feels average as compared to some competitors
    • No limited manufacturer tread life warranty is offered
    • Noise levels are relatively higher than other tires
    • Slightly more expensive than other tires in the same segment

SimpleTire’s view on Armstrong Desert Dog MT tires

The Armstrong Desert Dog MT is good for those who long for an aggressive-looking mud-terrain tire at an affordable price. Its compound is engineered to serve longer and it has adequate durability to protect from wear and tear. The performance of the tire is good on rocky and slippery surfaces, but overall off-road performance might not be as great as some of the other choices available in the market. Yes, on mud, the tire will serve you very well thanks to its optimized tread blocks and wide-angled shoulder scallops.

The tire might not be the best of the choices when it comes to handling on challenging terrains. Likewise, its noise levels are slightly higher, and when compared to some of its competitors, its pricing is on the higher side. The tire comes with 6 years of warranty on defects in workmanship and materials, however, the lack of tread life warranty can be a downside.

This tire is an alternate choice for those who consider tires like the Predator New Mutant X-MT, General Grabber X3, Otani SA4000, Gladiator QR-900MT, and Ironman All Country M/T.

Vehicles the Armstrong Desert Dog MT is a good replacement tire for

Compatible with SUVs, light trucks, and Jeeps, the Desert Dog MT could be a replacement choice for vehicles like Dodge RAM 3500, Ford F-250, GMC Sierra 3500, Jeep Wrangler, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan.

So far so good! I have put about 1,000 miles on them. Road noise is very minimal, tires look SUPER aggressive. No complaints here!
