For years, General all-terrain tires have been a favorite of drivers of light trucks, Jeeps, and SUVs. They’re durable for off-road use, they have a tough, aggressive tread pattern that means consistent, dependable traction in snow, mud, gravel, dirt, or sand, and they feature a good tread life warranty.

The General Grabber A/TX is no exception. Building on the success of the Grabber AT2, the General Grabber A/TX is not just an exceptional tire for off-road use, it’s a great performer on the pavement as well. The Grabber A/TX has the tire industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service and is pre-drilled for easy installation of studs (where permitted) for icy conditions.

It definitely is a tire that lives up to the reputation that follows the General brand, but don’t just take our word for it. Let’s go in for a closer look with this General Grabber A/TX review:

    Features and Benefits

The General Grabber A/TX is a great balance of civilized drivability on the highway and capable off-road traction and resilience. Here’s just some of the features and benefits that make the Grabber A/TX a great choice:

    • Aggressive high-void tread pattern with full 17/32” tread depth
    • Good self-cleaning of mud, dirt, debris, stones, as the tire turns
    • 5-row tread design means biting edges in every direction for solid traction off-road
    • Built with General’s Duragen technology for tough internal construction
    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified and pre-drilled for installation of studs, where permitted, to further enhance winter traction and performance
    • Available with solid white letter sidewall on select sizes for stylish looks
    • Alternating shoulder scoops provide extra lateral traction for soft surfaces like sand or soupy mud
    • Comfort Balance Technology puts an extra layer of rubber subtread in the tire’s construction, helping to cushion against bumps and vibrations
    • Tread pitch is computer tuned to help keep road noise low
    • Double polyester sidewall plies guard against punctures and impacts
    • StabiliTread design boosts tread rigidity for high-speed stability and optimizes footprint to put the most rubber in contact with the road
    • 2-ply polyester casing with multiple steel belts and polyamide reinforcement plies

Available in a wide range for sizes, the Grabber A/TX is backed by a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty on non-LT metric and flotation sizes, and 50,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty on LT metric and flotation sizes. Additionally, the tire comes with General’s 45 Day Satisfaction Guarantee.

    Pros and Cons

So, is this the right all-terrain tire for your ride and budget? Before you decide, let’s take a look at the tire’s strengths.

    PROS:

    • Tough enough for the roughest off-road use
    • Unbeatable traction
    • Impressive winter performance, and can be pinned with studs (where permitted) to further enhance performance in icy, slushy, and snowy conditions
    • Generous tread life coverage
    • Comfortable and well-mannered on pavement

Unfortunately, no tire is perfect, and that means the Grabber A/TX has some drawbacks:

    CONS:

    • Can feel a little clumsy on dry pavement
    • Can be noisy, especially when pinned with stud
    • Not the most fuel efficient tire

SimpleTire’s view on General Grabber A/TX tires

There are plenty of options out there when it comes to all-terrain tires, with many choices on the market at all price points. It’s our view that the General Grabber A/TX is one of the better all-terrain tires out there. It’s incredibly durable, with plenty of real-world evidence to back that up. Traction is hard to beat in all but the dead-worst conditions, and it can also definitely get the job done in deep snow or slush, with its Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating.

Noise levels can be a bit high, but not the kind of thing that will wear you out on a long drive, and the Grabber A/TX’s ride quality and road manners are better than many all-terrain tires can offer, thanks to General’s Comfort Balance Technology. Additionally, the warranty of this tire is quite strong, especially when you consider that many all-terrain tires aren’t covered for tread life mileage at all. The Grabber A/TX from General is one of the best-selling all-terrain tires on the market, and for good reason. It’s better than just competent, it’s a phenomenally good value and good performer.

Purchased a set of these in LT275/60/20 for a 2018 Silverado Z71 leveled 2.25". They only rubbed just a bit when backing with the wheel fully turned to the right. Installed with 2300 miles on the truck, and traded the truck with 68000 miles last month. Rotated every oil change. Probably had used 65% of the tread. Dealer didn't penalize me on the trade for needing new tires. I'm impressed !!! Getting another set in 285/60/20 for my 2022 Z71 in the next week or so. Mildly noisy, and noticeably rougher than the factory tires, but it could be the suspension level kit that contributed to the stiffer ride. Highly recommend for all terrain use. I tow a 5000lb bay boat often, so boat ramp traction is necessary. These are incredibly good tires

It hasn't been that long so I can not comment on the tread life and have not went through a winter yet with these tires. The price was great and so far they seem to be holding up quite well.

I've had different General Grabbers over the years. In fact, I replaced a set of AT/2's with X3's - and I am glad I'm back with the AT/X. They've been excellent for the last month and I don't expect that to change.
