Temp Spare Tires

Starting in the early 90s, manufacturers began saving space and weight on many vehicles by equipping them with a “donut” or “space-saver” spare tire. The space-saver spare is smaller than the rest of the tires on the vehicle, with thinner rubber and a soft tread compound. Space-saver spares are designed to be driven only for limited distances and speeds under 50 mph.

Space-saver spares also compromise a vehicle’s handling and braking, and in some cases can affect a vehicle’s electronic stability control and traction-control systems. Despite their drawbacks, a spare is a spare…and you can’t do without them!
