Ultra high performance all season tires are designed for drivers who like to push their vehicles to the limit from time to time; while they’re not all-out racing tires, ultra high performance all season tires were developed for the maximum in traction and control when cornering, accelerating and braking. The best all-around compromise, of course, is an ultra high performance tire that gets year-round traction, including wet weather and light snow.

Let’s start off with the Yokohama AVID ENVigor, with a W-speed rating and all-season silica tread compound. A five-rib directional tread pattern, linked shoulder blocks and continuous tapered center rib mean improved straight-line tracking and handling in wet or dry weather; angled grooves and adaptive 3D sipes enhance wet traction and light-snow traction.


One of the best all-season tires we’ve run across is the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70, with a dual-compound tread (a silica-enhanced Tube Multicell compound on top of a standard winter tread formulation). The result is a flexible, porous tire compound that helps wick away water from the tire’s contact patch in nasty weather. The tread pattern features a center rib at the circumference, independent intermediate and shoulder blocks and 3-D zigzag sipes for all-weather traction without the noise that is sometimes associated with winter tires. Unlike some ultra high performance all-season tires, the Blizzak WS70 features the industry’s mountain + snowflake stamp for a true winter tire rating.

The Hankook Ventus V4 ES H105 is an affordable entry in the ultra high performance all season tire category, with an all-season tread compound and directional tread pattern. Wide main grooves at the circumference and lateral side slots help channel water away from the tire’s contact patch, minimizing the chance of hydroplaning, while sipes multiply the number of biting edges in winter weather. Hankook’s Controlled Footprint Shape uses the tire’s twin steel belts and spiral-wrapped nylon for stable handling and long wear.

Another affordable ultra high performance all season tire is the Kumho Ecsta 4X; it was developed with a silica-infused tread compound and asymmetric tread design for crisp steering response and handling. The notched center rib reduces noise and improves road contact for steady straight-line steering feel; four grooves at the circumference evacuate water from the tire footprint to fight hydroplaning. Internally, the Ecsta 4X’s twin steel belts and spiral-wrapped jointless cap ply reinforcements help enhance handling and wear, with Kumho’s ESCOT “tension control optimization” technology.
