Aerodynamics and Design


As manufacturers squeeze all the fuel efficiency they can out of their designs, aerodynamics have been a huge concern –as well as looking sleek and advanced, an aerodynamic car cuts wind resistance for enhanced fuel efficiency. Modern designs are a pretty far cry from the boxy sedans of the 70s and 80s, but aerodynamics is hardly a new concern.

All the way back in 1923, Romanian engineer Aurel Persu ruminated on the ideal aerodynamic design; Persu decided that the ideal aerodynamic shape found in nature was a raindrop as it falls to the ground, with a super-low drag coefficient of 0.04.   • The DeLorean from “Back to the Future” – The DeLorean was as much a product of the 80s as anything you can think of. With its brushed-stainless skin, angular body lines, gullwing doors and complicated backstory involving the flamboyant John Z. DeLorean himself, the car wasn’t an especially strong performer…but it sure does sum up a point in time nicely.

Coolest Concept Cars for 2014


Over the years, manufacturers always field some concept cars at the Detroit Auto Show and others around the world. Sometimes they’re showcasing some great ideas, other times…not so much. Here are some standouts we noticed for 2014: 

  • Audi Allroad Shooting Brake – A “shooting brake” is a really archaic term for a small station wagon design, and the Audi Allroad is a sort of tiny crossover SUV…with a 408 horsepower hybrid drivetrain. This tidy little crossover looks like something that could actually make it to production and to car dealerships someday.
  • Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Concept – This one also has a pretty good chance at production, with an unpainted sheet metal body and an assortment of stripes, flares and scoops to go along ...[more]

World’s First Electric Formula One Car Makes Its Debut In Las Vegas


With the first race of the inaugural Formula E Championship scheduled flag off in Beijing this September, participants have begun unveiling their speed machines. The first to be unveiled was the Spark-Renault SRT-01E Formula E car. It was showcased to the public for the first time on Monday, January 6th, at a makeshift race course in Las Vegas. Brazilian Formula One driver Lucas di Grassi was on hand to show-off the car’s performance.

For the uninitiated, the Formula E Championship is a grand prix for electric cars. As such, the unveiling of the Spark-Renault SRT-01E Formula E car had been eagerly anticipated by electric car and racing enthusiasts. The speed machine, designed by Spark Racing Technologies, certainly did not disappoint.
